Hill City Howlers News Release
THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg lost 11-2 in the opening game of a four-game series with Wilmington and the first game of a brief four-game homestand...The Hillcats have now lost four of their last five games and eight out of eleven after winning eight out of nine...Tonight they play game two of a four-game series with Wilmington...After this set they play their next 10 games on the road and complete a stretch of 18 out of 22 away from City Stadium...
VS. WILMINGTON: This season the Rocks are 10-7 against the Cats and 4-3 at City Stadium...The Hillcats went just 3-16 against.the Blue Rocks in 2007 and were 1-8 at home...Last year the Rocks had two 4-game sweeps and two 3-game sweeps of the Cats...Wilmington holds the all-time advantage in the series 159-115 and are 69-57 at Lynchburg...
ROUGH ROAD: The Hillcats finished their eight-game road trip Saturday with a 3-5 record...The series loss at Potomac was the fourth straight series the Cats have failed to win (0-3-1) after they took five series in a row...
MOVING ON UP: LHP Brian Hollday was promoted to Double-A Altoona today and INF Angel Gonzalez was promoted yesterday...Holliday won Carolina League Pitcher-of-the-Week honors last week (July 7-13), as he allowed just two runs over his last two starts (12 innings) and won both outings...The southpaw has spent parts of four seasons in Lynchburg and made his Double-A debut with a spot start earlier this season (allowed five runs in three and 2/3 innings in a loss)...With the Hillcats he went 4-8 with a 6.02 ERA in 21 games (18 starts)...Gonzalez made his Double-A debut last night with the Curve and 1-for-4 with a run scored...With the Green & Gold he batted .251 with three home runs and 34 RBI...
WHOPPING WATTS: C Kris Watts went 2-for-4 last night with a double and a two-run homer...He now has smacked four home runs in his last seven games after going homerless in his first 44 contests...Watts hit the first three long balls on the Hillcats recent eight-game road trip, including his first multi-homer game of his career last Wednesday at Frederick...Over his current five-game hitting streak he is 8-for-17 (.471) with three home runs, six RBI and four runs scored...Since returning from Double-A Altoona the catcher has gone 33-for-101 (.327) in 31 games after going a combined 9-for-62 (.145) between Lynchburg and Altoona in his first 20 games...He is hitting .354 (17-for-48) with six doubles, four homers and 12 RBI in 15 games so far in July...
CAUGHT IN THE ACT: Last night C Kris Watts caught Chris McConnell trying to steal second base in the second inning...It was essentially the first time a Lynchburg catcher had thrown out a potential base thieve since June 29th against Wilmington (20 games ago)...Three men have been "caught stealing" since then, but two were pickoffs by the pitcher that turned into caught stealing's and the other was a base runner (Wilmington's Derrick Robinson) that stopped running because he thought the pitch was fouled off...The Hillcats are last in the Carolina League in caught stealing percentage with a 24% clip (41-for-128)...
GRAND RETURN: Wilmington's Brad Correll went 3-for-5 last night with two runs scored and six RBI...Correll was a Hillcat in 2006 and hit .254 with six homers and 38 RBI in 86 games...In his first at-bat back in the Hill City the slugger hit a two-run laser shot over the wall in left to give the Blue Rocks a two-run lead and in the seventh he hit a grand slam to make it a 7-2 contest...Last season Correll hit 23 home runs and had 80 RBI in 59 games with Lancaster (Red Sox affiliate) in the California League...This season he was hitting .341 with a league-leading 15 home runs and 49 RBI with the Kansas City T-Bones in the Northern League (Independent)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Everett Teaford was taken in the 12th round of the 2006 draft by the Royals out of Georgia Southern University...His final season with the Eagles the lefty went 10-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 19 games (16 starts)...He made his professional debut in 2006 in the Pioneer League (Rookie) with Idaho Falls and went 5-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 games (12 starts)...Last year he pitched for Low A-Burlington in the Midwest League and went 6-8 with a 4.68 ERA in 27 games (21 starts)...This season with the Blue Rocks, Teaford has gone 5-3 with 3.28 ERA in 19 games (14 starts) and a save...He was named a Mid-Season Carolina League All-Star...This year against Lynchburg he has gone 2-1 with a 2.30 ERA (eight earned runs in 31 and 1/3 innings) in five starts...His last start was against Lynchburg and he allowed five runs (three earned) in six and 2/3 innings of action in taking the loss...He has made more starts against the Cats than anyone in the league...
