Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - For the first time this season, a pair of Wilmington Blue Rocks have swept the Carolina League's weekly awards. On Monday, the league named first baseman Brad Correll the Player of the Week and right-hander Ed Cegarra its Pitcher of the Week. The tandem joins infielder Kurt Mertins as the only Blue Rocks to receive a weekly award this season.
Correll, who joined Wilmington on July 4 after signing a minor league free-agent contract with the Kansas City Royals organization, capped off a torrid week with a pair of homers, including a grand slam, plus six RBIs in Sunday evening's victory in Lynchburg. The 27-year-old batted .455 (10-22) for the week of July 14-20 with three home runs, eight RBIs and seven runs scored. He slugged 1.000 for the week. In 15 games with the Rocks, Correll is hitting .357 with four homers and 11 RBIs. He brings an 11-game hitting streak into Monday night's game versus Lynchburg.
Cegarra, a 19-year-old who began the season with Low-A Burlington, won his weekly honor based on a stellar outing in Salem last Thursday. The native of Venezuela tied a career high with eight innings of shutout ball, holding the Avalanche to five hits while striking out five in a 7-2 Wilmington victory. In 10 starts since his Advanced-A promotion, Cegarra is 3-4 with a 4.43 ERA. The righty has fanned 30 and walked just 11 in 61.0 innings as a Blue Rock.
Mertins was named the league's Player of the Week on April 21. Wilmington players won a weekly honor seven times in 2007, but never swept the both the pitcher and batter awards in the same week.
The Blue Rocks return to the Riverfront on Friday, July 25 to open a three-game set with the Kinston Indians at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 302-888-BLUE, visit www.bluerocks.com or stop by the Frawley Stadium ticket office, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
