Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored two runs in the tenth inning Monday night but couldn't hold the lead as Winston-Salem took the series opening win 7-6 on Ernie Shore Field in extra innings. Winston-Salem (16-13) benefited from two Salem (9-19) errors in the extra inning.
The Avalanche, with two out in the tenth, scored its pair of runs to take the lead. With Mark Ori at second base, Koby Clemens struck out swinging against Henry Mabee. The ball, though, hit the dirt and skipped away from catcher Francisco Hernandez. Ori, noticing that the plate was uncovered, scooted home on the play for a 5-4 Salem advantage. Next, Tim Torres blasted a ball down the left-field line that went for an RBI double and a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, however, Winston-Salem quickly mounted a charge. C.J. Retherford scorched a ball to right for a single and reached third on a double off the bat of John Shelby III. After Chris Salamida struck Estee Harris out, he intentionally walked Salvador Sanchez to load the bases. The next batter, Joe Persichina, bounced a ball to second base that rolled hopped under Roberto Mena's glove to score two runs. With runners at the corners, Greg Paiml flicked a ball to right field for the second out. Jordan Parraz's throw home, though, eluded catcher Koby Clemens up the third base line and Sanchez scored to end the game.
Winston-Salem had a chance in the home half of the ninth. Freddie Thon opened the inning with a double to center against Raymar Diaz. With Joe Persichina pinch-running, Greg Paiml socked a single to center. Nick Moresi came up throwing to home and cut Persichina down at home.
In the loss, Salem got a trio of hits from Collin DeLome and Mark Ori's eighth home run of the season. In addition, right-hander Erick Abreu lasted a season-long seven innings.
Salem has now gone without a win in five second-half extra-inning games in 2008 and stands at 8-21 in one-run games in '08.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:00 Tuesday with Salem righty Chad Wagler facing Winston-Salem's Jacob Rasner.
