Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LAST TIME OUT - On Saturday night at Coastal Federal Field, C Clint Sammons delivered a clutch RBI single into centerfield in the bottom of the 9th, which gave the Birds a dramatic 11-10 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The wildly entertaining series opener saw the Pelicans relinquish a late six-run lead only to have them come-from-behind to take game one in thrilling fashion. With the win the Pelicans snapped a two-game losing skid, and also helped them remain in first-place in the Southern Division.
PELICANS WING - RHP James Parr will toe the rubber for the Birds tonight in the series opener. Parr is 4-5 with a 4.97 ERA in 11 starts and two relief appearances. In his last outing, 7/4, James was overly impressive in 7.1 innings at Potomac where he yielded just one run on four hits and struck out seven in the Pelicans 15-3 routing of the P-Nats. The righty from Albuquerque, NM has earned a win in two of his last three outings and has lasted five plus innings in four straight starts. The highlight of his 2006 season came on 5/13 at Potomac when he fanned a career-high 10 in seven scoreless innings. James is listed as the #14 prospect in the Braves system by Baseball America. He turned down an opportunity to pitch for the University of Hawaii, and was selected in the 4th rd. of the `04 draft. Last year he was 13-4 with a 3.41 ERA with Rome. His 13 wins tied Chuck James for the most wins in the organization.
ALL-TIME VS. WILMINGTON- The Pelicans have posted an 80-70 record against Wilmington through seven plus years of franchise history. Last year the Pelicans split the series with the Rocks 10-10. The Pelicans have only lost one season series against the Blue Rocks, in 2001, when the Rocks took the set 11-9.
THIS YEAR VS. THE ROCKS- Myrtle Beach is 5-6 against Wilmington this year. The Pelicans are hitting .251 with 3 homers and 11 (11-14) stolen bases against the Rocks. The Blue Rocks are hitting .288 with 10 HR's and 4 (4-8) stolen bags vs. MB.
TEN SPOT - With last night's win over the Blue Rocks the Pelicans became the first team in the CL to win 10 games in the second half. The Birds are a league-best 10-5.
FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATIC - The Pelicans have won each of their last two games at home in their final at-bat. On 7/1 Mark Jurich blasted a two-out, two-run homer to give the Birds a 4-3 win over Frederick. Last night it was Clint Sammons' RBI single in the bottom of the 9th, which gave the Pelicans an 11-10 win.
HEAVY HITTING HAWAIIAN - 1B Kala Ka'aihue's massive home run last night in the 4th inning gave the Hawaii native 18 home runs total this year after hitting 15 in the first half in A-Rome. His 18 HR's are 2nd most in all of Class-A baseball.
FANTASTIC FOUR - The top four hitters in the Pelicans line-up last night (Holt, Young, Pope, Ka'aihue) combined to go 8-17 with a homer, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored.
WELCOME BACK DIORY - Last night SS Diory Hernandez played in his first game since 4/29 after breaking a bone in his hand and went 0-4 with a run scored. Diory hit .200 with 3 HR's and led the team in RBI with 14 before going on the DL on 4/30.
FRESH SAMMONS - C Clint Sammons has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and is batting .386 (17-44) in that stretch. He's lifted his average from .200 to .237 since 6/21.
