Warthogs come back to win 6-5 over Kinston

Winston-Salem, NC - In a back-and-forth game, the Winston-Salem Warthogs scored two runs in the ninth inning to pull out a 6-5 win over Kinston on Sunday afternoon in Grainger Stadium. The Warthogs (10-7) trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning, before Rod Allen Jr. smashed his first home run of the year, a three-run shot to left field that tied the game at three. Winston-Salem took a 4-3 lead the next inning on an RBI single from Donny Lucy. Kinston scored a run in the seventh and eighth inning to take back the lead at 5-4. Warthogs second baseman Jose De Los Santos led of the ninth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allen Jr. Cory Haggerty's ground ball to second base was misplayed by Argenis Reyes and put runners on the corners with only one out. Sean Smith, who was 0-for-8 in the series, lifted a single to right field to score De Los Santos and tie the game at five. On the play, Haggerty advanced to third base and came home to score on an RBI groundout by Victor Mercedes to give the Warthogs a 6-5 advantage. Garry Bakker came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning and collected his eighth save of the season. Fernando Hernandez (5-3) earned the win for Winston-Salem, while Michael Finnocchi (0-1) took the loss for the Kinston Indians (9-8). De Los Santos finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Warthogs, while Jordan Brown and Jose Constanza collected three hits apiece for the Indians. The final game of the three-game series will take place on Monday at 11 AM at Grainger Stadium. Taking the mound for Winston-Salem will be RHP Jack Egbert, and he will face Indians RHP Kevin Dixon.
