Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (35-35, 7-8) dropped the opener of their three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Saturday night, 11-10. The Rocks rallied from down 9-5 to take a 10-9 eighth-inning lead, but a sac fly in the eighth and a one-out single in the ninth gave the Pelicans the game. Wilmington left a season-worst 15 men on base, including 10 in scoring position.

Tied 10-10 in the ninth, Myrtle Beach got the lead-off man on base when Ryan Schroyer hit Diory Hernandez with a pitch. Mark Jurich flew out to left field and Clint Sammons was at the plate with an 0-1 count when Schroyer threw to first base. The right-hander's toss to check on Hernandez resulted in a balk, giving Hernandez second base. On the very next pitch, Sammons singled to center field and Hernandez scored from second for an 11-10 Myrtle Beach win.

Trailing 9-5 at the start of the eighth inning, Wilmington rallied for their first lead of the game. Jed Lowrie singled, Jeff Natale walked and Claudio Arias brought them both in with a two-run double. Andrew Pinckney then tied the game with a two-run homer to right, his sixth of the year. Two batters later, Ian Bladergroen singled to center and quickly advanced two bases on two wild pitches by reliever Moises Hernandez. Scott White brought Bladergroen home with an RBI single to left for a 10-9 Wilmington lead.

Wilmington lost the lead that same inning as Randy Newsom allowed back-to-back singles to Greg Creek and J.C. Holt. Holt's base hit sent Creek to third base and Matt Young brought Creek home with a sacrifice fly to left for a 10-10 tie.

Pelicans reliever Michael Nix (2-3) got the win, throwing 1.2 innings of shutout, one-hit ball, walking one and striking out three. Schroyer (0-3) took the loss for Wilmington, allowing one run on one hit, a walk and a strikeout over two-thirds of an inning.

Wilmington starting pitcher Kevin Guyette went 5.2 innings allowing a personal season-worst seven runs on eight hits and a walk, striking out two. Newsom went two innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The Blue Rocks and Pelicans play game two of their series on Sunday night at 6:02 p.m. Wilmington right-hander Gary Galvez (4-3, 4.62) opposes Myrtle Beach right-hander James Parr (4-5, 4.97).
