P-Nats win on strong starting pitching
July 9, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
SALEM, VA Once again, starting left-hander Ricardo Morales pitched well enough to win. This time he actually did.
The last time Morales took the hill for the Potomac Nationals last Sunday against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans the southpaw went seven innings and gave up only two runs, but the P-Nats lost.
This time, he got a little more run support and pitched even better as the Nationals won the first game of a three-game series in Salem, 5-1.
Morales went seven innings again, but nary a run was scored off the starter.
The P-Nats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cristian Guerrero had a base hit up the middle to bring in Tony Blanco.
They added two more in the sixth inning when Luke Montz had a two-run double into the gap in left-center field.
Another was scored in the seventh to make it 4-0 on an RBI double to center by Brandon Powell.
Powell's single in the ninth, bringing home Roger Bernadina, capped Potomac's scoring at 5.
The only run the Avalanche scored was in the bottom of the ninth inning on a homer to left field by Francisco Caraballo off reliever Greg Bunn.
The win snapped Salem's five-game winning streak.
The same two teams play tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
Then on Sunday, the game that was originally scheduled for 7:07 p.m. will be played at 12:07 p.m.
