Pelicans game notes

June 3, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LAST TIME OUT - Kelvin Villa tossed his second straight six-inning scoreless performance and the Pelicans blanked the Nationals 6-0 on Friday night at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium. 2B J.C. Holt and CF Matt Young combined to go 5-10 with four runs scored at the top of the order and 3B Van Pope cranked his team-leading 5th HR of the year to provide the offense for the Pelicans.

PELICANS WING - The Pelicans send LHP Matt Harrison to the mound. Harrison, a 6'5 lefty out of Stem, NC, makes his 11th start of the `06 season. The southpaw has picked up a win in each of his last three starts, and has earned a "W" in six of his last eight outings. In his last start, 5/28, at CFF vs. WIL he allowed four runs and seven hits, while striking out six and walking just one in the Pelicans 5-4 win over the Rocks. Over his last 20 innings on the mound he has allowed just four runs and has struck out 16. Tonight he looks to do something that he's only accomplished once this season...win on the road - he's 5-1 at home, 1-2 on the road. In three of his 10 starts this year he has not allowed a run. Harrison is the #10 prospect in the Braves system as rated by Baseball America. Last year he was 12-7 with a 3.23 in Rome. He was 3rd in the league in wins and 2nd in innings pitched (167.0).

LIVIN' IN THE LATE INNINGS - In the first five games of the road trip the Pelicans have scored 23 of their 30 runs in innings 7, 8, and 9. That's 77% of their runs.

ALL-TIME VS. THE NATS - Myrtle Beach has posted a 74-72 all-time record against Potomac. Last season Potomac took the season series 11-9. Myrtle Beach has an all-time winning record against every team in the league except Kinston.

THIS YEAR VS. POTOMAC- The Birds are 5-3 against the Nats this year. The Pelicans enter tonight's game hitting .282 with seven HR's against the Nationals. Potomac is hitting .250 with one HR vs. MB. The Birds have outscored the Nats 40-27.

LIFE ON THE ROAD - With last night's split of the doubleheader the Pelicans are 4-2 on their current road trip. When the Pelicans embarked on this road swing they had recorded just four wins away from home all year - they have equaled that total in six games on the trip. The Birds took two of three from Winston-Salem before heading to Potomac where they are 2-1 through the first two contests. As a team the Pelicans are hitting .306 with three home runs on the road trip.

BIG "O" - The Pelicans are hitting .339 (37-109) with three HR's and 20 runs over the last three games. In each of the last three they have blasted 10 or more hits.

VAN THE MAN - 3B Van Pope homered over the left field wall last night giving him five round-trippers on the year. His three-run bomb was his third HR on the road this year, second at Pfitzner Stadium.

FULLY "LOAD-ED" - OF Carl Loadenthal brings a seven-game hitting streak into tonight's ballgame. During the streak he is hitting .550 (11-20) with two doubles, four runs, three RBI, and two stolen bases. He has lifted his batting average from .215 to .294.

STAR JONES - OF Brandon Jones has knocked in a run in four straight games, bringing his total to 28 (3rd most in Braves organization.)
