Warthogs top Hillcats Saturday

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs (30-24) topped Lynchburg, 3-2, Saturday night in front of 7,581 at Ernie Shore Field. Jay Marshall earned his third win in relief for the Warthogs, who've won two of the three games in the series. Fernando Hernandez picked up his fourth save. Starter, Adam Russell, pitched well in a no-decision. Russell gave up just one earned run on six hits in 7 1/3 innings. Felipe Garcia suffered his first loss for the Hillcats.

The Hillcats went up 1-0 in the first inning. With one out, Brian Bixler was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI double from Steven Pearce. Lynchburg scored its second run in the top of the eighth. With one out, Pedro Powell singled, send to second on a sac bunt and scored on an RBI single by Brian Bixler.

The Warthogs trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the eighth. Felipe Garcia relieved Wardell Starling, who pitched seven shutout innings. Jose De Los Santos singled and scored on an RBI triple by Chris Amador. Cory Haggerty was walked. Sean Smith followed with an RBI single to score Amador and tie the game at 2.

Haggerty and Smith were balked to second and third. Haggerty scored on an RBI sac fly by Victor Mercedes.

Chris Kelly led the Warthogs with two hits.

The Hillcats and Warthogs wrap up their four game series on Sunday at 5pm. RHP Lucas Harrell (5-1, 1.80) will pitch for Winston-Salem. RHP Matt Guillory (4-2, 5.35) will toss for Lynchburg.
