
Rocks get swept in double header

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (25-30) were swept in a double header on Saturday night by the Salem Avalanche (24-30), Carolina League affiliate of the Houston Astros. Salem took game one 4-3 and won game two 5-2.
In game one Salem took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off starter Andrew Dobies. With two outs in the inning Francisco Caraballo connected for a two-run double, his first hit in the series after going 0-for-6.
The Avalanche took a 4-0 lead in the fifth when Jeffery Mackor connected for a two-run triple.
Andrew Dobies (5-2) suffered his second straight loss allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings. Dobies also walked three and struck out one.
The Blue Rocks cut the lead in half in the fifth when Jacoby Ellsbury connected for a two-out two-run homer to make it 4-2. It was Ellsbury's fourth homer of the year.
Wilmington scored their final run in sixth on an RBI double from Scott White scoring Jeff Natale. In what was a controversial inning, the Blue Rocks could have scored more runs but had a few calls go against them.
Claudio Arias had what could have been an RBI base hit taken away from him when the home plate umpire ruled the ball fell foul down the left field line. Arias eventually struck out. Then with the tying run on third Mickey Hall grounded out to end the inning but looked to be safe at first when first-baseman Scott Robinson bobbled the ball before throwing to pitcher Rodrigo Escobar covering.
In game two the Avalanche again took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fourth off starter Scott Shoemaker. Drew Sutton connected for an RBI double then Mario Garza followed up with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Shoemaker got the no decision allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over four innings of work. Shoemaker also walked one and struck out three.
Wilmington tied the game at two with a run in the fifth inning and a run in the sixth inning. Bryan Pritz broke up the shutout with an RBI single scoring John Otness in the fifth. Then in the sixth inning Ellsbury scored the tying run when he came home from third on a wild pitch. Ellsbury led off the inning with a single then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third base.
Salem reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning plating three off relievers Jason Richardson and Kyle Jackson. Salem took a 3-2 lead when Edwin Maysonet scored from third on a wild pitch. Mackor capped off the scoring when he connected for a two-run single with the bases loaded for a 5-2 Avalanche lead.
Richardson (0-4) took the loss allowing one run on two hits over two innings of work. Richardson also walked one and struck out two.
Jackson allowed two runs on one hit in one inning of work. Jackson also walked three and struck out two.
The Blue Rocks and Avalanche wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon with the Blue Rocks sending right-hander Luis Mendoza (5-2, 3.20) to the mound. Salem will counter with right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier (2-5, 5.59). First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m.
