Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans suffered two defeats at the hands of the Potomac Nationals on Saturday at Pfitzner Stadium...With a 6-3 lead in a suspended game from June 27, the Birds surrendered eight unanswered runs to fall 11-6 in game one and lost 1-0 in an extra- innings contest in game two on a walkoff single by Potomac's Stephen Perez...Game one of the defacto doubleheader picked up in the top of the fifth inning with two on and one out, and the Pelicans ahead 6-3. RYAN BORES induced an inning-ending double play to get through the frame with the lead intact...The Nationals batted around and scored five runs to pull ahead in the sixth, three of which were unearned...Potomac tacked on three more runs, all earned, two on Bores and another off of left-hander CODY EGE...The Pelicans had baserunners in four of the five innings played but failed to score off of Blake Schwartz (2-0) who went the whole way for the win. Bores (0-1) suffered the loss in game one....In game two, Myrtle Beach threatened in the opening frame. CHRIS GARIA reached on a fielding error by Khayyan Norfork before getting to third with no outs on a double by CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK. Nationals starter Austin Voth then notched back-to-back strikeouts before getting Beck to fly out to left to end the inning. It was the only time in the eight-inning ballgame that the Pelicans got a man to third base...JASON KNAPP and MARTIRE GARCIA matched zeros with the Nationals over the first seven innings. Knapp fired four scoreless innings, allowing five hits but no walks with a season-high eight strikeouts. The Pelicans' defense helped things out in the third inning, erasing a man at the plate on a relay from Williams and Bostick on a double by Pleffner...
Garcia did not allow a baserunner in his first two innings of work in relief of Knapp and worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh...The regulation seven-inning game was tied 0-0 and went to extras...Again Garia found himself in scoring position, this time in the top of the eighth inning. He drew a four-pitch walk off of Chris Manno with two outs and stole his team-leading 27th base. Bostick though struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the threat...Then the Nationals walked it off in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Renda found his way on with an infield single on a ground ball to second base. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Perez brought him around on a chopper to right field. Renda just beat the tag of catcher David Lyon after the throw from Bolinger...Garcia (1-1) took the loss in game two, while Manno (2-0) picked up the win.
LOOK MOM! NO WALKS!: For the first time this season, the Pelicans did not walk a single batter on Friday-and did so again in game two on Saturday. CHAD BELL tossed five walkless innings, CODY BUCKEL posted three walkless frames, and JOSE LECLERC pitched a perfect ninth on Friday. JASON KNAPP and MARTIRE GARCIA combined for 7 1/3 walkless innings before the P-Nats walked it off. Since game one on Saturday officially was played on June 27, the Pelicans have posted 19 1/3 consecutive innings without a walk. Making it all the more unlikely, the Birds lead the Carolina League in free passes handed out and have issued the fourth-most in the minors. The team's 4.41 BB/9 rate is the highest among full-season minor league clubs.
SEVENTEEN AND COUNTING: Although yesterday's suspended game technically was played on June 27, if you include the game, the Pelicans have not scored in 17 straight innings; they have been shutout since a three-run fourth inning on July 4.
TRIPLE-THREAT: Pelicans outfielder CHRIS GARIA is in the midst of a breakout season, hitting .294, the highest mark of his career outside of his All-Star Season in the Dominican Summer League in 2011 when he hit .315. With his triple on Monday night, he now has the most triples in the Carolina League since Alex Presley knocked 11 triples in 2009 for the Lynchburg Hillcats. The ten triples is also a career-high for Curaçao native. He is now just four stolen bases shy of his career-high in steals as well and is only three steals back of the active leader in the league, former Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Jacob May of Winston-Salem.
SHUFFLE UP AND DEAL: Counting the announcement of the initial roster as a transaction, the Pelicans had just 23 total transactions through the end of May. The club had 31 moves in June. After the longest stretch without a transaction since May 25 (13 days without), the Pelicans had their first transactions in nine days on Friday, reinstating ROYCE BOLINGER from the disabled list and receiving infielder EDWIN GARCIA from Frisco and outfielder LEWIS BRINSON from Hickory. HANSER ALBERTO and CHRIS GRAYSON were both promoted to Double-A. Brinson will not join the team until Monday.
(ONE OF) THE BEST AROUND: With the two losses yesterday, the Birds dropped a spot and now possess the sixth-best record in full- season MiLB. They trail the South Atlantic League's Savannah Sand Gnats (57-26) and Greensboro Grasshoppers (56-31), the Midwest League's Kane County Cougars (57-28), the Eastern League's Portland Sea Dogs (58-29), and now also the California League's Bakersfield Blaze (55-31), the former Rangers Advanced A affiliate who have won six in a row. The Pelicans have been as high as second overall, when they trailed only the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League.
SHINING UNDER THE TV SPOTLIGHT: In their National TV debut on Thursday, the Pelicans picked up the W. OF NICK WILLIAMS, who hit back-to-back homers on regional television in the Southwest in a "A" Spring Training Game, blasted a first-inning homer, and Luis Parra carved through the Dash lineup for seven-inning of one-run ball.
THE BEST CATCHER IN THE WORLD?: Just like 2013, Rangers farmhands JORGE ALFARO and JOEY GALLO were named to the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. Neither participated last year due to injury but are both currently on their respective active rosters at the moment. Alfaro and Braves minor leaguer (and former Hillcat) Christian Bethancourt are the two catchers on the World Team. The game will be played before the on Sunday, July 13 at Target Field at 5:00 p.m. and will air on MLB Network.
STRUTTING THEIR FEATHERS: The Pelicans roster currently features four players highlighted in Baseball America's list of the Rangers' Top 30 prospects, including two of the top 5, and two in the overall top 100 in MiLB. Catcher JORGE ALFARO (ranked No. 2 in the Rangers Top 30, No. 54 in the overall Top 100) and NICK WILLIAMS (3, 97) rank in the top 100. The other players in the Texas Top 30 are OF LEWIS BRINSON (15) and RHP JOSE LECLERC (16). Unranked in the top 30, CHRIS GARIA is the "Fastest Baserunner" and PRESTON BECK has the "Best Outfield Arm." CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK, traded from Oakland in December, was ranked No. 18 in the Athletics' top 30 by BA. Third baseman JOEY GALLO (4, 60) and RHPs ALEX "CHI CHI" GONZALEZ (5), KEONE KELA (18), and LHP ALEXANDER CLAUDIO (27) were all on the Pelicans' Opening Day Roster and are now with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders.

(6-1, 2.35 ERA) REPERTOIRE Faulkner throws a fastball, curveball, splitter, and changeup. The fastball is around 89-92 mph and can touch 93 with some arm-side run. The Rangers took away his splitter when he first signed, having him throw a straight changeup since signing as a pro that ranges from 82-83 mph. He began throwing the splitter again last season which was his best pitch in high school. It runs 85-88 mph with good sink. He throws a slurvy curveball at 78-82 mph. ABOUT ANDREW The only South Carolina native on the roster, Andrew Faulkner is in his first season with the Pelicans after spending the last two years a state to the north with the Hickory Crawdads. Faulkner was a staple in the Hickory rotation last season and returns to the starting rotation after a few bullpen appearances early in the season. Before signing with the Rangers for a reported $125,000, Faulkner had committed to the Univ. of South Carolina to play collegiately. LAST TIME OUT DATE OPPONENT RESULT IP H R ER BB SO HR WP P/S 7/1/14 vs. Winston-Salem W, 8-1 7.0 4 1 1 1 3 0 0 87/58 2014 SEASON Andrew began the season with an outing out of the bullpen and has slid back into his more comfortable role. Primarily a starter in 2013, Faulkner piggybacked with Luis Parra, alternating starting and long-relief roles for two starts before being placed into his own turn in the rotation when Cody Buckel was placed on the DL the first time (4/18). Faulkner has allowed just one run over his last two starts and is now second in the league in ERA, behind only Ryan Merritt of Carolina. He has the second-lowest WHIP on the team (1.16), trailing only Sam Wolff. Faulkner has yet to allow a home run, the only qualifying Carolina League starter who has yet to do so.
Every other qualifying pitcher has allowed at least two home runs and as many as 11 (Brady Wager of Frederick). Before his first half finale, he was also the only qualifying pitcher without a loss. He still has the best record of any qualifying pitcher. The Pelicans have led at the time of Faulkner's departure in 10 of the 14 starts he has made. The club had never trailed upon his departure until his final start of the first half; it was the first time he had been on the hook for the loss when leaving a game. He was one of nine Pelicans players, including three pitchers, elected to the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game. He tossed a perfect third inning with two strikeouts for the Carolina League in the 3-2 loss to the California League.
