Mudcats Drop Matinee to Sox

Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats fell to the Salem Red Sox 8-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Five Country Stadium. The Mudcats (10-8, 39-46) were held to eight base runners and the Red Sox (9-8, 42-43) won their third consecutive series over Carolina.

Adam Plutko (1-4) suffered the loss after lasting two innings. He hurled two innings with six hits, six runs (five earned), a walk and two strikeouts. He faced seven batters in the third inning without recording an out. Corey Littrell (5-4) was strong for the Sox, dealing seven innings of work with just three hits, a run, two walks and four strikeouts.

Carolina jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Yhoxian Medina extended his hit streak to nine with a leadoff double. Erik Gonzalez followed with an infield single and Medina crossed the plate on a double play.

Salem's scored six in the third inning off Plutko after seven straight Red Sox reached. The inning was highlighted with RBI singles from Reed Gragnani, Jantzen Witte, and a two-run knock from Aneury Tavarez. Kevin Heller launched a RBI double as well and a run scored on a throwing error by Medina at second base to cap off the scoring for Salem in the third.

The Red Sox tacked on runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Witte doubled to leadoff the seventh and Heller singled to move Witte to third. Tavarez reached on a fielder's choice to score him. Tavarez capped a four-run afternoon by launching a solo homer out to right with two outs in the ninth to give Salem the 8-1 lead.

The Mudcats tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI single by LeVon Washington.

Carolina begins a road series against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday, July 7. First pitch at Calvin Falwell Field is set for 7:05 p.m. The team returns home to host the Winston-Salem Dash with the first of four games on Friday, July 11.
