Frederick Keys News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA -Michael Burgess gave the Frederick Keys the lead for good with a bases-clearing double in the seventh, as the orange and black defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-3 on Sunday night at Calvin Falwell Field. It was the Keys first series victory against their Northern Division rival in 2014. On the mound, Sebastian Vader was solid in his Carolina League debut tossing six innings of three-run baseball.

Frederick grabbed the first lead on the first pitch of the second inning. Facing Braves No. 1 pitching prospect Lucas Sims, Brenden Webb hit a no-doubt homer to rightfield to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. It was Webb's eighth deep fly of the season.

Vader (1-0) saw the minimum through the first two innings, but the Hillcats pulled ahead in the third. Emerson Landoni singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Blake Brown. One batter later, Eric Garcia plated Landoni, while an RBI single by David Nick made it 2-1.

Lynchburg added one more run in the fourth on a solo homer by Kevin Ahrens to right, but that was all Vader would allow. Although he permitted eight hits, the righty was able to earn his first CL victory. Additionally, it was the Californian's 10th quality start of 2014 (he finished with nine at Low-A Delmarva).

The Keys left six aboard over their first six innings, including runners in scoring position in the third-sixth, however Frederick answered against Sims (6-7) in the seventh. Starting to tire, the right-hander retired Wynston Sawyer and Jerome Pena to begin the frame, but walked Mike Yastrzemski to keep the inning alive. Glynn Davis added a single, while Trey Mancini was hit by a pitch to load things up for Burgess. The Hillcats elected to stick with Sims against the lefty slugger, but the decision backfired, as the Floridian doubled to right-center to unload the bases. Going 2-for-5, Burgess finished with a total of eight RBIs over the three-game series.

In the ninth, the Keys added two more runs on a double by Pena, an RBI single by Yastrzemski, a bunt single by Davis and a fielder's choice by Mancini.

Jesse Beal tossed two scoreless innings of one-hit baseball to earn his first save of the year. Sims suffered the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

Frederick continues its seven-game roadtrip, when the orange and black head to the Roanoke Valley to take on the Salem Red Sox on Monday night. Mark Blackmar (4-1, 3.89) takes ball in game one of four, and will be countered by right-hander Joe Gunkel (1-1, 2.93). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. from LewisGale Field, and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source. Frederick returns to Harry Grove Stadium on July 11, when the Potomac Nationals come to town. For ticket information, fans can call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
