Salem RidgeYaks News Release

The Salem Red Sox and Carolina Mudcats play the series finale this afternoon at 2:00.

Pitching Leads the Way Again: Pat Light, Madison Younginer, and Dayan Diaz held the Mudcats to just five hits and two runs in a 3-2 victory. The outstanding performances on the mound continues a few trends of late. After Light's six innings yesterday, the Sox are now 24-9 when their starter goes six innings or more. Salem holds a 17-34 record when their starter doesn't reach the sixth. Also, despite allowing seven runs two nights ago, the Salem staff still holds an impressive 2.35 team ERA over the last ten games (7-3 record).

Miller Time: Mike Miller has been everything the Sox could've hoped for since being called up on the first of June. Miller has sustained his good play with the Salem Sox over 28 games now with the club, hitting .315 with 19 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Miller has been espe- cially hot of late, with hits in five straight games. Miller holds a .500 average during his last five games (9/18). Miller's best day came on July 2nd, when he went 4-4 with a walk and two runs scored against the Frederick Keys. Mike has scored a run in six straight games, and reached base in 12 of the 14 games he's played in the second half.

Amazing Aneury: Aneury Tavarez has been the surprise power leader for the Salem Sox this year. Tavarez hit his ninth long ball of the year Friday night, two clear of the second most on the team (Blair, 7). Aneury's 2-3 performance last night gives him a six game hit streak, with hits in seven of eight overall, holding a .423 average in his last eight games (11/26). Tavarez has been hot for nearly a month now. Aneury's average hit a mid-season low .186 on June 1st. Since that point, he's hitting .324 (34/105), raising his season average to .245 coming into play this afternoon.

Lightning Struck Twice: After two rough outings to start the second half, Pat Light has bounced back and then some. Light threw his second straight quality outing, allowing just a run on four hits in six innings of work, picking up back to back wins. Light is 2-0 with a 0.81 ERA (1 ER/11 IP) in his last two starts. That comes on the heels of Light's first two starts of the second half, where Pat was roughed up to an 0-2 record, with a 21.32 ERA (15 ER/6.1 IP), and 20 hits allowed.

Sunday Struggles: The Salem Sox have not had much success on Sundays this year. After winning their first Sunday contest at Myrtle Beach this season, The Sox have lost six straight road games played on Sundays. Overall, Salem is just 3-10 on Sundays this season. Sa- lem did pick up a victory on its most recent Sunday game, at home against Wilmington 4-2. The Sox lone other Sunday win came on the final day of the first half, a 6-5 walk-off win over Lynchburg.

Playoff Implications in July?: Including this afternoon's series finale with the Mudcats, only seven of Salem's final 54 games are against the two teams they will compete with for the second half playoff birth in the Southern Division. The Sox will play one more three game set with Carolina in Salem the final week of July and a final three game series with the Dash in Winston late in August. Myrtle Beach clinched a playoff spot with the first half title.
