Pelicans Drop Series Finale in Walk-Off Fashion

Potomac's Michael Taylor laced a game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning and the Nationals (15-15) topped the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-13) 3-2 in front of 4,981 fans at Pfitzner Stadium. The Pelicans lost two of three against the Nats and finish the seven-game road trip at 3-4.

No team held a lead of more than one run in what was just the Pelicans second one-run loss of the season. Right-hander Richie Mirowski (2-2) earned the win out of the bullpen, allowing one unearned run over two hits. Jon Edwards (1-1) was stung with his first loss, surrendering Taylor's game-winning knock.

Trailing 2-1, the Pelicans tied the game in the eighth inning following a two-out strikeout from Drew Robinson. It was a wild pitch, and catcher Cole Leonida's throw to first hit Robinson in the back, allowing Skole to score the tying run from third.

The Birds threatened to win it in the ninth inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Mirowski got Kevin Torres to foul out and Edwin Garcia to line out, keeping the game tied 2-2.

The Pelicans took the early lead in the game. Kellin Deglan, who hit a home run in his final at-bat Saturday, launched an opposite field solo home run in his first at-bat Sunday, giving the Pelicans the early 1-0 advantage.

The Nationals scratched across an unearned run in the third inning fueled by a pair of errors. They took the lead in the fifth inning on a two-out RBI base hit from Adrian Sanchez.

Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff worked six innings for the Pelicans and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. He struck out four and walked just two. Despite the no decision, he worked at least six innings for the third straight start and has allowed just two earned runs in his last 13 innings of work.

Taylor Hill worked seven strong innings for the Nationals, allowing one earned run on two hits. At one point, the right-hander retired 14 consecutive Pelicans.

The Pelicans managed just four hits in the game and finished the afternoon 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Pelicans return home Tuesday when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to TicketReturn.com Field. It will be a Team Tuesday presented by Sheriar Press - the first 1,000 fans will receive a Jason Heyward poster. Right-hander Alec Asher (2-2, 3.58) will take the ball for Myrtle Beach and he'll be opposed by righty Greg Ross (first appearance). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.
