Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats set a current franchise record of 13 base on balls in a 6-5 loss to the Frederick Keys on a sloppy Sunday afternoon. Playing through a light rain, the Mudcats dropped their fourth in a row, and fell to 11-19. The Keys earned the sweep of the weekend series, and climb to 17-13.
Zach Davies (2-2) was the winning pitcher for the Keys. The right-hander tossed 5.2 frames, allowing five runs on seven hits.
Shawn Morimando (1-4) struggled with his command from the first pitch, walking a season-high six batters over four innings. Despite his struggles, he held Frederick to two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
The walks cost Carolina a run in the second inning. Two passes and a balked pushed the runners into scoring position, and a groundout by Glynn Davis plated the games' first run.
In the fourth, the Keys' Brenden Webb doubled, and moved to third on Jerome Pena's fly out to center. Davis this earned a walk, but was caught in a run down between first and second. While Sabourin applied the tag on Davis, Webb scored from third for a 2-0 lead.
The Keys made it 3-0 on a bases loaded force play hit into by Jason Esposito in the fifth, but the Mudcats got a run back when Luigi Rodriguez doubled off the wall in right field. Rodriguez scored on a groundout by Zack MacPhee.
Frederick expanded the lead to 6-1 with three in the sixth. Against reliever Michael Goodnight, the Keys drew three walks, and hits from Glynn Davis and Johnny Ruettiger to bring home one. A fielding error on MacPhee at second base allowed two runs to score.
The Mudcats stormed back into the game by plating four in their half of the sixth, chasing Davies from the game. Francisco Lindor reached on a fielder's choice, and walks to Jordan Smith and Charlie Valerio loaded the bases with two out. Rodriguez cracked his second double of the afternoon off the wall in right to bring home two. Justin Toole then beat out a single to second, driving in two more.
Frederick's pitching held Carolina scoreless the rest of the way. The 13 walks by Mudcats' pitchers were three shy of the all-time record set by the then-Pirates Double-A affiliate in 1998.
After a day off on Monday, May 6th, the Mudcats hit the road for three game at Salem beginning Tuesday, May 7th. Carolina returns home to host the Lynchburg Hillcats for four games on Friday, May 10th. The night will feature "Fireworks Friday" presented by Carolina Ford Dealers, and the stars of TruTv's Lizard Lick Towing will be in the house.
