Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - With the first road trip of the season underway, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans broke records with an exciting first homestand of the year that boasted many special events.

Through the first eight games of the 2009 campaign, the Pelicans drew paid attendance of 27,774 fans to BB&T Coastal Field, an increase of 5% over attendance this time last year. The total includes a record-tying 6,599 fans on Opening Day on April 9th and averages out to close to 3,500 fans per contest. The 27,774 fans who attended the Birds' first two series of the 2009 campaign are part of the third-largest homestand in Myrtle Beach Pelicans history.

Even more impressive, the number of fans who purchased tickets and passed through the turnstiles increased by a whopping 21%.

"That increase means that not only are more people buying tickets, but more people are using their tickets too," said Pelicans General Manager North Johnson. "This shows that more and more folks are recognizing that the Pelicans are the best entertainment value on the Grand Strand."

A family of four can enjoy a Pelicans game for less than $54, a full dollar less than the national average for Minor League Baseball. That price includes the cost of four tickets, four hot dogs, two sodas, two beers, four souvenir programs and parking.

Among the highlights drawing fans out to BB&T Coastal Field during opening week were the Zooperstars and the appearance of longtime Pittsburgh Steelers great Jerome Bettis, who threw out the first pitch in the Pelicans' second game of a four-game set with the Frederick Keys on April 14th.

The Pelicans return home from their brief three-game journey to visit the Potomac Nationals on Monday, April 20th for the first of three with the Kinston Indians. Tickets for that series and games throughout the summer are available by contacting the Pelicans box office at (843) 918-6000 or toll free at 1-877-918-TIXX. Tickets are also available 24 hours a day on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
