Frederick Keys News Release

Last week, the Frederick Keys spoiled Salem's home opener. Tonight, the Red Sox returned the favor. In front of a Keys home opening day record 6,281 fans, Salem defeated Frederick 5-4.

The Keys got on the scoreboard early against Red Sox starter Jose Capellan. Matt Angle led off the top of the first with an infield hit. He stole second and scored on a Matt Tucker double, giving Frederick a 1-0 lead. Tyler Henson then knocked in Tucker with a single to center to extend Frederick's advantage to two.

Capellan settled down after that. After surrendering a walk to Chris Vinyard, the southpaw set down the next 13 batters he faced in order.

While Capellan was mowing down hitters, the Salem hitters fought back into the game. In the third, Chih-Hsien Chang hit a ground rule double to center. Two batters later, Jason Place blasted a two-run homer to tie the ball game.

The very next inning, Luis Exposito hit a solo homerun to give Salem their first lead of the night, 3-2. The Red Sox tacked on another run in the fifth. Ryan Kalish hit a blooper down the left field line. Frederick left-fielder Kraig Binick tried to throw Kalish out at second, but ended up throwing the ball away. With Kalish now on third, Jason Place hit a sacrafice fly, extending the Salem lead to two.

The Keys cut the deficit in half in the sixth. Tucker led the inning off with a solo homerun, his first of the season, pulling Frederick to within one.

The Red Sox got the run back in the seventh. With one man out, Kalish singled. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Mike Jones single.

Frederick once again pulled to within one in the eighth. Chris Vinyard blasted a solo homer to make it a one-run game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Waring led things off with a triple down the right field line. Salem reliever Jason Blackey beared down, and worked out of trouble without allowing Waring to score.

Capellan got the win, improving his record to 1-0. Tim Bascom took the loss. He drops to 0-1. Jason Blackey was credited with the save, his second of the season.

The second of a three game series will be played tomorrow at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
