Pelicans Can't Comeback Late in Pitcher's Duel

WILMINGTON, DE- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, failed in their comeback attempt in the ninth inning to lose to the Wimington Blue Rocks 4-3 on Wednesday night. Luke Jackson pitched four scoreless innings for the Pelicans and the game was scoreless through six innings.

Blue Rocks starter Brooks Pounders was just as good in the early parts of the game pitching six scoreless before the Pelicans pounced for two runs in the seventh. Jackson struck out six in his four innings while allowing only two hits. Zach Osborne came in to pitch for the Birds in the fifth and gave them two scoreless innings until getting touched up for four runs in the seventh. No more than four runners came to the plate in any inning until the seventh.

The Pelicans struck first in the seventh off of Pounders. Tomas Telis lead off the inning with a line drive double to right. Hanser Alberto then sacrifice bunted over Telis to put him at third. Brett Nicholas was then intentionally walked to put runners on the corners and set up the double play and Vinny DiFazio made them pay. DiFazio smacked a double to centerfield scoring both Telis and Nicholas. Chris Grayson singled for the third Myrtle Beach hit of the inning putting runners on the corner again but a double play by Jhonny Gomez ended the threat.

The Rocks responded quickly in the bottom of the seventh. Cheslor Cuthbert led off the inning with a double to right and then Brett Eibner reached on an error by third baseman Santiago Chirino. A single by Guelin Beltre to right fielder Jeremy Williams skipped under his glove going all the way to the wall. Cuthbert and Eibner both scored and Beltre advanced all way to third. Two batters later Juan Graterol untied the game with an RBI single, scoring Beltre. He advanced into scoring position on another error by Jeremy Willliams. The third of three infield singles in a row by Wilmington scored Graterol. Luis Piterson, Nick Van Stratten and finally Matt Fields all had infield hits. In all, Wilmington had six hit in the inning and scored four runs. Three of the hits were to Jeremy Williams and the rest were infield singles.

Robinson Yambati and Jon Edwards, who struck out the side for the second time this season, traded scoreless eight innings. Telis started the rally again with a single in the ninth to leadoff off Yambati. A stolen base and two wild pitches allowed Telis to score and allowed Nicholas to reach first on a dropped strikeout. The threat was ended when Vinny DiFazio grounded into a double play to second ending the game.

The Pelicans try to salvage one win in the four game series versus Wilmington on Thursday night. It is the final regular season road game of the season for Myrtle Beach and is slated to start at 6:35. RHP Nick McBride (2-2) will make his sixth start for the Pelicans and Leondy Perez (4-4) will go for Wilmington. The Pelicans return home Saturday after an off day on Friday.
