Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, were beaten by the Wilmington Blue Rocks 6-5 on Tuesday night. Pelican homeruns by Brett Nicholas and Odubel Herrera gave the Pelicans an early lead but a Brett Eibner 2-run homerun in the sixth gave the Blue Rocks the lead and their bullpen held it for the win.
Wilmington started the scoring in the first when Lane Adams drove in Nick Van Stratten, who tripled. The Pelicans responded in the top of the second with a Brett Nicholas solo blast to right off of Rocks starter Matt Ridings. In the bottom of the inning Brett Eibner got his big day started with a double off Pelican starter Kyle Devore. Then back-to-back errors by Brett Nicholas allowed Eibner to score and put another runner in scoring position. The first error was a fielding error on a ground ball by Angel Franco that allowed Eibner to score. The next batter Nicholas whiffed on a pickoff attempt that allowed Franco go to second. Luis Piterson then singled home Franco to put the Rocks up 3-1.
Myrtle Beach tacked on a run in the third with Odubel Herrera scoring on a force attempt gone wrong by shortstop Orlando Calixte. The Pelicans took the lead in the fourth on a three run homerun by Herrera, also driving in Jeremy Williams and Jhonny Gomez who both singled. Those would be the final birds runs of the night as Santiago Garrido and Edwin Carl would shut down Myrtle Beach for the final four innings.
Pelicans starter Kyle Devore pitched six innings but a sixth inning two run homerun by Eibner put Wilmington on top. In his six innings, he allowed six runs but only four earned due to the Nicholas errors. He also struck out six batters. Phil Klein pitched well again, going two innings and only allowing a hit while striking out three. He has now allowed only one run in nine innings with Myrtle Beach.
The Pelicans and Blue Rocks play game three of the four game set on Wednesday night at 6:35 in Wilmington. Luke Jackson looks to rebound from a poor start on Friday and will face off against the appropriately named Brooks Pounders, who tips in at 6'4" 270 LBS.
With the loss the Pelicans did not make up any room on the Winston-Salem Dash who also lost Tuesday. Myrtle Beach has three and a half game deficit in the division and only five games left. The Pelicans have already clinched a playoff spot and tickets went on sale Tuesday morning at the TicketReturn.com Field box office or at myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
Myrtle Beach returns home on Saturday to face the Lynchburg Hillcats in the final series of the regular season for three games. There will be fireworks on Sunday and Monday. For tickets or more information visit myrtlebeachpelicans.com or call 843-918-6000.
