
Carl & Calixte to Play in Arizona Fall League

Wilmington, DE - The prestigious Arizona Fall League and the Kansas City Royals today named seven players from the Royals organization who will compete for the Surprise Saguaros. All seven players have spent time with the Wilmington Blue Rocks including current right-handed pitcher Edwin Carl and shortstop Orlando Calixte. An eighth player, a pitcher, will be announced at a later date. Carl and Calixte will join Blue Rocks alumni in outfielders Brian Fletcher and Whit Merrifield, infielder Alex McClure and left-handed pitchers Jon Keck and Justin Marks.
Carl, the Farmington, NM native, has been on a tear of recent, tossing 10 no-hit innings. His ERA with Wilmington sits at 4.08 with a 2-2 record and a pair of saves. He has struck out 56 batters in 53 innings of work. Carl began the year with Low-A Kane County where he pitched to a 1.92 ERA in 12 games. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in July of 2010.
Calixte, the Dominican Republic native, was just named Carolina League Player of the Week for August 20-26. With the Rocks, he is hitting .289 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 59 games. Like Carl, he also began the year at Kane County where he hit .241 in 62 games with 10 homers. He was signed as a free agent in August of 2010. He will be a "taxi squad" player for the team and consequently eligible to play on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.
Fletcher, Merrifield, McClure and Keck all spent time with Wilmington this season. Fletcher, who will be assured maximum playing time as the Royals' "priority player", began the year on the Riverfront and was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on June 20 after hitting .289 in 67 games. At Double-A, he has bopped nine homers and hit .245 in 59 games. Merrifield spent all of 2011 in Wilmington as well as the first four months in 2012. During his tenure, Merrifield played in 227 games, hitting .260 with 13 home runs and 72 RBIs. He was bumped to Double-A on August 7 and is hitting .270 in 18 games. McClure also spent parts of the last two seasons with the Blue Crew. He hit .207 with 32 RBIs in 125 games over the two seasons. McClure was sent to Double-A on June 20 and is hitting .215 in 56 games. Keck began the year with Wilmington, pitching to a 1.61 ERA in 11 appearances totaling 22.1 innings. He was sent to Double-A on May 24 and has recorded a 4.28 in 26 appearances, logging 40 innings.
Marks came over from the Oakland farm system in the David DeJesus/Vin Mazzaro trade. He spent 2011 with the Blue Rocks, recording eight victories with a 3.98 ERA. He worked 144.2 innings and fanned 140 Carolina League batters. He hae been with Double-A for most of 2012. In 90.1 innings, he went 3-5 with a 3.69 ERA before getting bumped up to Triple-A Omaha this week.
The Arizona Fall League season will begin on Tuesday, October 9, with the Rising Stars Game set for November 3 and the Championship Game scheduled for November 17.
