Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- With the fans breaking a World Record in the background the Myrtle Beach Pelicans shut down the top hitting team in the Carolina League, the Lynchburg Hillcats and take game two of the three-game series, 4-0. The Pelicans pitching staff ran their consecutive scoreless innings streak to 19 and starter Sean White (W, 7-1) earned his league-leading (tie with two others) 7th win of the season in the shut out victory over the first place Cats.
Myrtle Beach didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard posting a couple of runs in the opening frame. CF Steven Doetsch led off the inning with a double down the rightfield line and advanced to third on a single from 2B Martin Prado, who extended his hitting streak to nine games in the process. With runners at the corners a no outs, LF Josh Burrus would bring in the first run of the night with a deep sacrifice fly to right, plating Doetsch to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning C Jarrod Saltalamacchia delivered an RBI single to right, scoring Prado to jump the Pelicans early advantage to 2-0.
In the 3rd inning the Pelicans padded their lead thanks to a Hillcats miscue in the field. Pelicans RF Matt Esquivel singled and stole second with two outs. A couple of pitches later Esquivel swiped third, but the throw from Lynchburg C Mike McCuistion got past 3B Andy Wilson and trickled into left, allowing Esquivel to score. The error, charged to Wilson gave the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.
While the Pelicans added to their lead in the 3rd inning the fans were busy at work in the stands, breaking the World Record for "Most Groucho Marx Glasses Worn at the Same Time." 1,827 fans simultaneously donned the funny looking glasses for 15 minutes, nearly doubling the previous record of 937.
With White breezing through the Hillcats batting order the Pelicans would tack on another run in the bottom of the 5th inning, this time with their third longball of the series. Prado smashed a deep solo shot over the leftfield wall, his second HR of the season, off of Cats starter Patrick O'Brien (L, 3-5), to pad the Pelicans lead, 4-0, which is how it would end.
White shut out the Hillcats with seven solid innings in the starting effort, giving up seven hits to the team with the best record in the league. White also fanned eight batters in the strong performance. Pelicans reliever Ralph Roberts finished the final two frames without giving up a hit. O'Brien took the loss for the Hillcats after giving up four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in six inning on the hill.
The Pelicans have won their second straight and have pulled to within a game of .500 (29-30). Myrtle Beach, who is 0-4 in games with a chance to sweep, will look to break out the brooms against the Cats. Offensively for the Birds 8 of the 9 hitters in the line-up registered hits with Doetsch going 2-4 with a run and Prado leading the charge with a 2-4 night at the dish. Prado has posted five multi-hit games in a row.
