Shortslef garners Pitcher of the Week honors

Lynchburg Hillcats left-handed starter Josh Shortslef earned a pair of wins over the last seven days and for his efforts was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week. The New York native earned his first career complete game shutout on May, 30th in a 3-0 blanking of the Potomac Nationals. As an encore, he went seven strong innings allowing just three earned runs in a 5-4 victory over Winston-Salem at Ernie Shore Field on Saturday.

The Hannibal (NY) H.S. product dazzled against Potomac, allowing just three singles in the Hillcats 3-0 win. In addition, he retired the Nationals in order on three occasions to begin the game while improving to 3-2.

In a gutsy performance against Winston-Salem, the Sterling, NY resident went seven productive innings, allowing just three earned runs to pick up his second win in as many starts.

Shortslef becomes the second Lynchburg hurler (Wardell Starling was selected for the week of 4/25-5/1) and third Lynchburg player (Javier Guzman was selected for the week of 4/18-4/24) to take home Carolina League Player of the Week honors.

Selected by Pittsburgh in the sixth round of the 2000 draft, Shortslef tied for the 2nd most wins (11) in the South Atlantic League last season. In 2002, he led the New York-Penn League in wins, compiling a record of 10-4 with a 3.33 ERA.
