Frederick Keys News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans spoiled RHP Chorye Spoone's return to the Frederick Keys. The Pelicans took advantage of three Frederick errors, and three wild pitches to defeat the Keys 9-5.

Spoone was making his first start for Frederick since pitching in the Mills Cup Championship clinching game in 2007. One of the O's top pitching prospects, Spoone is on the comeback trail after having surgery to repair a torn labrum.

The Pelicans got to Spoone in the first inning. CF Cole Miles led off the inning with a ground ball to second. 2B Ryan Adams threw the ball away, allowing Miles to get to second. It was ruled a hit and an error. Miles reached third on a ground out to first. 3B Donnell Linares then walked, bringing up 1B Ernesto Mejia. Spoone threw a wild pitch, allowing Miles to score and Linares to get to second. Later in the at bat, another pitch got away from Keys' C Wally Crancer. It was ruled a passed ball, and allowed Linares to reach third. Mejia knocked him in on a sac fly, making it 2-0.

The Keys got on the scoreboard in the second. With one man out, LF Tyler Henson drilled a solo homerun to left field.

Myrtle Beach padded their lead in the third. With one on and two out, Mejia drilled a two-run homer to right-center field, making it 4-1.

Spoone left after the fourth. He allowed four runs, three of which earned, on three hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out two.

Frederick began to battle back in the fifth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, DH Matt Tucker hit an RBI-single, making it 4-2. Starting RHP Erik Cordier then threw a wild pitch, allowing Adams to score from third, and pulling the Keys to within one.

The Keys tied it up in the sixth. With runners on the corners and two men down, Tucker delivered once again with an RBI-single, making it 4-4.

The tie didn't last for long. In the bottom of the sixth, with two on and one down, C Jesus Sucre drilled a three-run homer to left field. The Pelicans weren't done. RF Chris Shehan hit a grounder to short. SS Pedro Florimon threw wildly to first, allowing Shehan to reach second. He would score on a Miles single to center, making it 8-4.

Myrtle Beach tacked on one more run in the seventh, when Mejia blasted a solo homerun to deep left field. His second long ball of the game gave the Pelicans a five-run lead.

Frederick would score once more in the eighth, but it wasn't enough. RHP Rudy Darrow (3-0) got the win. He allowed one run in one inning of relief. RHP Brian Parker (4-2) took the loss, after surrendering four runs, three earned, in two innings of relief.

The Keys will try to even the series up at a game apiece Saturday night in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Keys return to Frederick on Friday, August 28th for the final six games of their regular season home schedule. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
