Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

KINSTON, N.C. - Off and running with a four-run first inning and paced by four longballs, the Pelicans cruised to a 10-6 victory in the series finale of three with the Kinston Indians.

Myrtle Beach got an impressive offensive display started in the top of the first inning. After a two-run double by Donell Linares, 2008 California-Carolina League Home Run Derby champion Ernesto Mejia smacked his first homer of an injury-riddled '09 campaign to put the Birds up 4-0. The Pelicans added three more in the second, two of them on Linares's tenth jack of the year and second in six games to follow a 21-game homerless drought. Myrtle Beach got its third homer in as many innings off Kinston starter Bryan Price with Cody Johnson's Carolina League-leading 29th bomb, a solo shot in the third. Price (3-7) didn't make it out of that inning, pitching to two batters and exiting after a Gerry Rodriguez single followed Johnson's blast.

Kinston erased three runs from their 8-0 deficit in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Cord Phelps and a two-run Ole Sheldon homer. However, the Pelicans' offensive outburst put Myrtle Beach starter Cole Rohrbough at ease. The left-hander allowed all three runs on four hits over five innings, striking out a season-high eight against three walks. Rohrbough (6-7) picked up his second straight victory.

The K-Tribe followed four scoreless innings on both sides with a three-run bottom of the eighth against Pelicans reliever Jaye Chapman to chop the Myrtle Beach lead to 8-6, but the Birds got two runs back in the ninth on Rodriguez's eighth round-tripper of the year to seal the win.

Friday night at BB&T Coastal Field, the Pelicans open a seven-game homestand beginning with a three-game weekend set with the Frederick Keys. First pitch for tomorrow's series opener is set for 7:05. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
