Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg scored a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings and received quality pitching from Jeff Locke in a 5-1 win over Winston-Salem in game one of a scheduled doubleheader at City Stadium Friday night. The second game was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday. The Cats will face off against the Dash at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

Locke got the start for the Hillcats and the southpaw tossed two scoreless innings to start the game. Winston-Salem starter Miguel Socolovich matched him with two scoreless frames.

The Dash (26-26, 64-56) struck first with a run in the top of the third. Dale Mollenhauer ripped a one-out double and stole third base. Greg Paiml drove in Mollenhauer with an RBI single to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg (22-30, 68-54) immediately answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Alex Presley hit a leadoff single off Socolovich and advanced to second on a bunt single by Jose De Los Santos. With Presley at second, De Los Santos at first and Chase d'Arnaud at the plate, the rains came down on City Stadium.

Following a 49-minute rain delay, play resumed and d'Arnaud delivered an RBI single that plated Presley. Josh Harrison followed with a sacrifice fly that scored De Los Santos and gave Lynchburg a 2-1 advantage.

The Cats added two more runs in the fourth. Kris Watts drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by Presley. De Los Santos followed with an infield single that loaded the bases. Socolovich struck out d'Arnaud, but he surrendered a two-run single to Harrison, which extended Lynchburg's lead to 4-1.

Lynchburg added one more run in the fifth when Matt Hague scored on Kent Sakamoto's RBI single.

Moises Robles pitched two innings of scoreless relief to seal the victory for the Hillcats.

Locke (4-8) allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings of work to earn the win in the 7-inning contest. The Lynchburg left-hander has not allowed more than one earned run in four of his last five starts. Socolovich (3-2) was charged with the loss after giving up seven hits and four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

The Hillcats have now won three straight games and four of their last five. Lynchburg will seek to continue its winning ways in game two of the series on Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. LHP Justin Wilson (6-7, 4.50 ERA) gets the start for Lynchburg while RHP Jacob Rasner (3-5, 4.49 ERA) will take the mound for the Dash.
