Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jaime Pedroza clubbed a two-run homer in the second inning, and Dwayne Pollok fired six quality innings as the Lancaster Barnstormers topped the Bridgeport Bluefish, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win maintained Lancaster's 5 1/2 game lead over the York Revolution in the Freedom Division.
Blake Gailen led off the second with a deep line drive to right field off Jonah Bayliss (1-3). Norm Hutchins made a leaping catch against the wall for the first out. Emerson Frostad followed with a fly ball in the same neighborhood which the Bridgeport right fielder was not able to reel in, and Frostad got to third with a triple. Bayliss bounced back to strike out Ryan Harvey, but Pedroza connected for his second two-run blast in two nights, this time to right center.
Lancaster did not have another runner reach third base in the game, and it was up to the staff to hold on to the lead.
Pollok (4-0), facing Bridgeport for the third straight start, was reached for the lone tally in the third. James Simmons singled up the middle leading off the inning. Joe Poletsky followed with a ground rule double into the left field corner. Simmons was thrown out at the plate on Kennard Jones' grounder to first, but Eddie Rogers got Poletsky across on a grounder to short which Pedroza bobbled for an error.
Prentice Redman grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Bluefish added only one hit over the next three innings against Pollok. The right-hander yielded only four on the night without issuing a walk. He fanned three.
Beau Vaughan and Jeff Bennett each retired two batters on ground balls and one on strikes, setting up Tim Hamulack for the ninth.
Lancaster's closer ran into some friction. After getting Redman on a foul pop up to first, the lefty walked Brock Peterson and yielded a single to Luis Lopez. Hutchins struck out for the second out, and Hamulack picked up his 12th save of the year on Angel Flores' bounder up the first base line.
The two clubs conclude their seven-game, home-and-home series on Thursday at 7:00. Lancaster will send right-hander Alan Johnson (3-4) to the hill against lefty Gilbert De La Vara (3-3). Fans may tune in to 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio cell phone app.
NOTES: Fehlandt Lentini extended his hitting streak to 18 with a double off the right field wall in the bottom of the eighth...It is the third longest streak in franchise history and is two short of Matt LeCroy's record from July, 2008...Pollok allowed only one run in 16 innings in his three starts against Bridgeport...Hamulack pitched his eighth straight scoreless one-inning appearance...He has two wins and five saves in the stretch...The game at two hours, 15 minutes, was the shortest nine-inning game of the season.
