Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - After back-to-back, back-and-forth, one-run wins, the Pawtucket Red Sox were limited to just one run in a 7-1 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on a gorgeous Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia played in the fourth game of his rehab assignment as he continues his recovery from offseason knee surgery. Pedroia batted third in the Pawtucket order, played seven innings at second base and went 0-for-3 with a walk, a pair of groundouts and a strikeout. In total, the former American League MVP saw 24 pitches. He coaxed a five-pitch, two-out walk in the third inning and, two innings later, battled with rehabbing Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle, who finally induced a groundout to short on the eighth pitch of the at-bat.

"I felt great," Pedroia said. "The timing's a little bit off, but, no, I felt great. I had long at-bats, fouled pitches and felt good. ... I'm pretty excited. I felt good, moving around real well. I'm right there."

Pedroia said he'll play Thursday, when the PawSox close out their series with the RailRiders at 11:05 a.m.

The RailRiders (20-24) climbed out to a first-inning lead and used a pair of home runs to extend that margin in the third game of the four-game series with the PawSox (19-23), who won 5-4 and 7-6 earlier this week.

Pawtucket shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin (3-for-5, 2B) and catcher Dan Butler (3-for-4, R in his second multi-hit game of the season) provided six of the team's eight hits.

Pawtucket starter Chandler Shepherd (L, 2-4) ceded four runs on seven hits and a walk over 3.1 innings, recording four strikeouts. Right-handed reliever Brandon Workman then dealt 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings with three strikeouts around a pair of walks.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Justus Sheffield made his return from the disabled list and tossed four shutout frames in which he struck out five and walked just one. Rehabbing Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle (W, 1-0) followed with one inning of one-run work, and Joe Harvey and Cody Carroll finished the victory by combining on four shutout stanzas.

Scranton scored in the top of the first inning when left fielder and leadoff man Tyler Wade doubled, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on an RBI infield single.

The RailRiders doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning on a one-out RBI double from second baseman Billy Fleming into the right-center gap. The next RailRider, No. 9 hitter Rey Navarro, stroked a two-run single up the middle to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Pawtucket inched onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Butler smacked a one-out single to center and moved to third on a double from Lin. PawSox right fielder Aneury Tavarez then skied a sacrifice fly to center to score Butler and trim the deficit to 4-1.

Scranton right fielder Ryan McBroom mashed a 430-foot home run to left in the eighth to make it 5-1, and rehabbing Yankee Greg Bird pulled a two-run shot to right-center in the ninth.

The PawSox conclude their four-game series with the RailRiders on Thursday at 11:05 a.m. Pawtucket right-hander Justin Haley (1-5, 3.63) is scheduled to start opposite RailRiders lefty Josh Rogers (3-3, 2.98). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 10:35 a.m.

The nine-game, eight-day homestand runs through the following Monday (May 28). Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
