Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Pawtucket Red Sox ended their rain-abbreviated series in Syracuse the way they began it, falling Tuesday by 4-3 final to the Chiefs at NBT Bank Stadium.
The set commenced on Saturday with a 4-3 victory for Syracuse, before Pawtucket rebounded to win Sunday's encounter, 5-3.
After Monday's scheduled match-up was rained out, the PawSox and Chiefs were scheduled to wrap up the series with a doubleheader featuring two seven-inning contests. But with rain forcing a 2-hour and 22-minute delay, the two clubs instead attempted to hold just one game, which they completed in 2:11.
It began with a 1-2-3 top of the first for Syracuse starter Yunesky Maya, who entered with a 4.96 ERA yet allowed just four hits and one run in five innings. Maya (W, 2-4) pitched with the lead for most of his stint, while his counterpart Steve Wright (L, 2-4) fell behind almost immediately.
Wright hit Eury Perez with a knuckle ball to start the bottom of the first, before walking Will Rhymes. A groundout and sacrifice fly by Tyler Moore, who reported to Syracuse after being optioned from the parent Washington Nationals, gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse made it 2-0 in the third, following a pair of singles and another sac fly. Corey Brown scored Chris Rahl, who led off the inning with a single, took second on bunt hit by Perez and reached third on Wright's wild pitch.
Back-to-back hits also began the Chiefs' half of the fourth, only in this case they were home runs by Mike Costanzo and Zach Walters. For Costanzo, it was his third in six appearances in the season series. Meanwhile, Walters's drive was his 12th homer overall.
The PawSox broke Maya's shutout spell with a two-out solo home run by Justin Henry in the fifth inning. It was Henry's second of the season; his first since the season opener on April 4.
Trailing 4-1, the Sox scored again in the eighth against reliever Tyler Robertson, one of five Syracuse pitchers. Brock Holt, who's hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games, singled and reached second on an error. Holt then scored on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s two-out double.
Bradley, who went 2-for-4, now owns a 14-game hitting streak since April 30. It's spanned both a stay on the disabled list and a stint with Boston.
After Mike Broadway (S, 2) took over on the mound with a 4-2 lead in the ninth, searching for his second save of the series, Bryce Brentz belted his 12th home run to account for his 45th RBI.
Pawtucket, which is idle on Wednesday and will return to McCoy Stadium to host the Buffalo Bisons on Cox Legends Night Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
Two members of the 1975 Boston Red Sox who captured the American League pennant, Bernie Carbo and Bill Lee, are scheduled to attend. Both Carbo and Lee, a Red Sox Hall of Famer, will be available for autographs and photos at the Cox Fan Center.
