SWB Sweeps Doubleheader, Earns Series Split with Buffalo

Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) swept a doubleheader from the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) on Tuesday night, and earned a series split. SWB won game one by a score of 6-5, and took game two, 6-2. Dan Johnson homered in each contest, and Thomas Neal smashed five hits in the doubleheader.

Buffalo started off strong by scoring three runs in the first two frames in game one. Ricardo Nanita doubled home two runs in the top of the first, and Anthony Gose singled home another Bisons run in the second. The second inning rally could've been much worse if it wasn't for the highlight reel catch made by Melky Mesa in center field, which robbed Sean Ochinko of extra bases. Mesa leaped and slammed into the wall, but held onto the ball.

A half-inning after his spectacular catch, Mesa hit his ninth home run of the season to put the RailRiders on the board. His mark of nine leads SWB.

The RailRiders took the lead with three runs in the third. Alberto Gonzalez led off with a double, and scored when Neal singled up the middle. Following a base hit by Zoilo Almonte, Ronnier Mustelier doubled to left-center field, which plated both Neal and Almonte. The two-bagger gave SWB the 4-3 lead.

Neal led off the fifth inning with a single to center field, and was advanced home when Johnson slammed his first home run of the day to right field. The ball deflected off the Budweiser Railhouse in right field, and gave SWB the 6-3 lead.

Moises Sierra hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, but Chase Whitley held off the rally to nail down the win.

Ivan Nova (2-0) allowed three runs over five innings, but struck out seven batters to earn his second win in as many starts with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Chad Jenkins (0-2) was handed the loss after allowing six runs in four and two-thirds innings.

The RailRiders would not trail in game two, as they put up five runs in the third inning. Addison Maruszak began the rally with a single to left field, and then moved to third on a single by Jeff Farnham. Neal followed with a base hit to right field, which drove home Maruszak and moved Farnham to second. Almonte then singled to right field, and the ball was bobbled by Sierra, which allowed Neal to score. The inning was capped when Johnson hit his second home run to right field, his eighth of the season.

Buffalo got on the board when Mauro Gomez hit his 17th home run of the season with Gose aboard. The two-run homer cut the SWB lead to 5-2.

SWB ended the night's scoring with a run in the sixth. Johnson led off with a double, and scored on Cody Grice's sacrifice fly to center field.

Dellin Betances (4-3) pitched two innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. Starter David Huff went four innings, and allowed two runs with five strikeouts.

Todd Redmond (1-1) took the loss; he allowed five runs over four innings of work.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre takes the day off on Wednesday, but returns to action on Thursday night against Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Phillies). Brett Marshall (2-5, 7.45) will get the starting nod for SWB, and will be opposed by former Major League All-Star, Carlos Zambrano. He has made three starts at the lower levels, and will make his first start for the Iron Pigs against the RailRiders. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
