Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Louisville Bats (30-35) waited until the ninth inning to get on the board, left runners on base in seven of the first eight innings and lost 5-2 to Durham (41-24) Monday night. The Bats left 10 players on base, seven of which were in scoring position. Overall the Bats were 1-for-14 with RISP.
Vince Belnome, whose 30 game on-base streak was snapped Saturday, didn't waste time starting a new streak. With Jason Bourgeois on first base, Belnome sent a 2-0 offering from Pedro Villarreal to the berm in left field for a 2-0 Durham lead in the third inning. It was Belnome's fifth homerun of the season.
Leslie Anderson matched Belnome in the sixth inning with a 2-run homerun to right field, his ninth of the season giving Durham a 4-0 lead. The homerun scored Wil Myers who had reached after a four pitch walk. Those were homeruns #14 and #15 surrendered by Villarreal this season, the most in the IL.
Villarreal (L, 1-4) was done after the sixth, he gave up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and the two homeruns allowed. He was making his first Triple-A start since his first career MLB start in Cincinnati on 6/5 against the Colorado Rockies. In that start he went 3.2 innings and gave up 10 hits, six runs and three homeruns.
Nick Christiani relieved Villarreal and quickly fell into the same groove, giving up a solo homerun to Jesus Flores, his first homerun of the year for a 5-0 lead. Christiani settled in however and got out of the inning without any more damage. Jose Arredondo pitched the eighth and Logan Ondrusek the ninth.
Durham starter J.D. Martin (W, 8-3) went a strong 6.2 innings giving up six hits while striking out three and walking two. Martin leads the IL with eight wins. Jeff Beliveau, Juan Sandoval and Kirby Yates (S, 3) combined to finish the game for Durham.
Louisville loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth after two singles and a HBP, but managed only two runs on a fielder's choice and a groundball out courtesy of Billy Hamilton and Corky Miller. Hamilton led the Bats going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases, giving him an IL-leading 37 on the season. Emmanuel Burriss also stole a base but snapped his seven game hit streak with an 0-for-4 night, reaching on a fielder's choice in the second inning.
The final game of the home stand will feature the Bats' RHP Chad Reineke (4-3, 3.51) and the Bulls' RHP Jake Odorizzi (5-1, 3.90). First pitch is at 7:05pm, the Bats pre-game show begins at 6:35pm with Matt Andrews and Nick Curran on Sports Radio 790.
Tuesday night is also our final Dog Day at the Park of the season! Bring your furry friend to the ballpark and enjoy a game with your pooch in our very own VIP (very important puppies) section. Tickets are just $7 for humans and $3 per dog. All dog ticket proceeds will help benefit the Kentucky Humane Society.
