Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Allentown, PA) - Chris McGuinness scored on a throwing error at the end of a wild play in the bottom of the eleventh inning to bring the Lehigh Valley IronPigs a 9-8 win in a game they trailed 8-1. The error on catcher Luis Martinez ended a four-hour contest that resulted in Pawtucket's 11th consecutive loss.
With the bases loaded and no one out in the 11th, Logan Moore hit a line drive to shortstop. The ball popped out of Jemile Weeks' glove, and Weeks threw home for the first out of the inning. PawSox catcher Martinez - looking to turn a double play at third - then sailed his throw into left field and McGuinness came to the plate. Quintin Berry's throw home was late and the winning run scored.
Pawtucket had surged to a seven-run lead in spite of having Joe Kelly removed after he was hit by a line drive in the first inning. The PawSox - who took a 1-0 lead on a Mike Miller in the top of the second inning and saw it tied on a Jordan Danks double in the bottom half - scored six runs in the third.
They took advantage of five walks from IronPigs' starter Jesse Biddle, who was making his AAA debut. Garin Cechinni and Miller had RBI singles and Berry stroked a two-run double in the inning. Thanks to those swings, in addition to a sacrifice fly from Allen Craig and Martinez's bases-loaded walk, the Sox led 7-1.
A dropped popup changed then the game completely. With two outs in the fifth and Aaron Altherr at second, Russ Canzler hit a sky-high pop toward second. Mike Miller - who had difficulty finding the ball in the twilight night - located the ball and camped beneath. When the ball popped out of his glove, Altherr scored - and the IronPigs would not stop there.
After Dalier Hinojosa - who tossed 3.2 solid innings in relief of Kelly - allowed a single to Phelps, he was lifted for Jonathan Aro. Aro yielded an RBI single to McGuinness and a two-run Danks double to bring the 'Pigs back within three at 8-5.
Aro surrendered the lead in the next inning. A leadoff walk to Edgar Duran started the trouble; Chase d'Arnaud and Tyler Henson then followed with singles to score Duran. Altherr then doubled to right-center to score two runs and the IronPigs had knotted the game, 8-8.
Dayan Diaz kept the game tied with three scoreless frames; his strong work took the game into extra innings.
For Lehigh Valley, Cesar Jimenez spun 4.2 innings of relief and allowed only the homer to Carlos Peguero. Chris Leroux and Adam Loewen tossed three scoreless frames.
Jess Todd relieved Diaz and retired the 'Pigs in order in the tenth. In the eleventh, he walked Phelps before McGuinness hit what could have been a double-play ball up the middle. It caromed off Todd's ankle and Lehigh Valley had two on with no out.
Danks then walked to load the bases before the game-winning play.
Cecchini finished the game with three hits and a walk; Berry had three hits and drove in two and Mike Miller doubled, singled and drove in a pair.
The finale of the series is scheduled for Thursday night with a 7:05 first pitch. Right-hander Keith Couch (3-8, 5.66) will get the start for Pawtucket while Lehigh Valley will counter with Aaron Nola (3-0, 2.28). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
The PawSox return home on Friday, July 10th to welcome Lehigh Valley for a three-game series that will lead into the Triple-A All-Star Break. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
