PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Designated hitter Josh Reddick and right fielder Daniel Nava combined to go 4-for-7 with four runs and all seven of the team's RBI as the Pawtucket Red Sox avoided the series sweep and halted the Indianapolis Indians six-game winning streak with a 7-6 victory on Friday night at McCoy Stadium.
The loss moves the Indians' record to 11-11, while the win improves the Red Sox to 9-13 on the season. Despite the loss ending the Tribe's longest winning streak since June 2-7, 2007, the Indians still hold a 3-1 advantage in the season series after taking the first three games of the series in Pawtucket.
After the Indians jumped out to the early in the top of the first when CF Jose Tabata doubled, stole second and scored on a single by DH Brian Myrow, Reddick quickly answered when he led off the bottom half of the frame with a line drive home run to right field to even the score at 1-1.
The Tribe quickly responded with another run in the second as 1B Steve Pearce led off the frame with a double and eventually came around to score on a ground out by C Luke Carlin. However, Reddick was not done for the Red Sox as he put them ahead in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run double that brought home 1B Lars Anderson and C Dusty Brown.
With Reddick jumping the Red Sox out to a 3-2 lead with three RBI over the first two frames, Nava then came through and sealed the victory with the club's final four RBI, including a key three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. The long ball for Nava, came after the Tribe evened the score at 3-3 in the top half of the frame on an RBI single by Carlin that scored Pearce, who ripped his second double of the contest earlier in the inning.
Brown and Reddick traveled along on Nava's home run after Brown led of the bottom of the inning with a double and Reddick drew a two-out walk. Though Nava's three-run bomb gave the PawSox a 6-3 lead at the time, it was his power surge later in the game that proved to be the difference.
This was because the Tribe quickly responded with a three-run blast of their own off the bat of 3B Pedro Alvarez. The Pirate's top prospect, who entered the contest in the midst of a 2-for-19 slump and who had not hit a home run since April 16, came through with a clutch shot in the fifth that plated 2B Doug Bernier and CF Jose Tabata and evened the score at 6-6.
With the game beginning anew following Alvarez's homer, Nava came through in the clutch for the PawSox in the seventh inning, driving the ball over the fence in left field to push them ahead 7-6. With his two homers and four RBI, Nava moves into a tie with Reddick for the Red Sox lead in longballs, while his 16 RBI are also now a team best.
After Nava, put the PawSox ahead, the Red Sox bullpen stepped up to shut down the Tribe as relievers Dustin Richardson (1.2 IP, 2 BB, 2 SO), Joe Nelson (0.2 IP, 1 BB) and Fernando Cabrera (1.0 IP, 2 SO) combined for 3.1 innings of hitless and scoreless relief work. Richardson earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season, while Nelson earned his third hold and Cabrera notched his fourth save.
Tribe reliever Corey Hamman (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO), who served up Nava's game-winning homer, was pinned with the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season. Neither starter figured in the decision as Indians RHP Brad Lincoln (6.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) gave up a six runs on seven hits over six hard fought innings and Pawtucket RHP Adam Mills (5.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work.
While Reddick (2-for-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and Nava (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) led the way with multi-hit, multi-run and multi-RBI efforts for the PawSox, Tabata (2-for-5, 2 R) and Pearce (2-for-4, 2 R) each collected multiple hits and runs for the Tribe, and Carlin (2-for-3, 2 RBI) turned in multiple hits and RBI.
The Tribe now heads to Lehigh Valley for a four-game series with the IronPigs beginning on Saturday, May 1 at 6:35 p.m. LHP Donnie Veal is expected to get the call for Indianapolis, while former Indians' RHP Ryan Vogelsong is the probable starter for Lehigh Valley.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:15 p.m.
