Canizares, Jones both homer in win over Norfolk

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Norfolk Tides 5-1 on Friday night at Coolray Field. Left fielder Mitch Jones hit his second home run in as many days. Designated hitter Barbaro Canizares hit his first home run of the season, a 3-run shot to center field. This is the G-Braves' second series win of the season. Gwinnett (11-12) sits in second place in the International League South and is 4 games behind Durham for first place. Norfolk (9-14) falls into a last place tie with Charlotte.

It Was Over When: With the G-Braves ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Canizares hit a home run that scored third baseman Wes Timmons and first baseman Freddie Freeman. It pushed the score to 5-1 and no Tides player was able to get a hit for the rest of the game.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Todd Redmond (3-2) pitched 5.0 innings and struck out 4 batters. Vladimir Nunez allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.0 IP. Cory Gearrin had one strike out in 1.0 IP. His scoreless streak now stands at 9.2 IP.

At the plate: Freeman went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Canizares went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run scored. Jones went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Chris George (1-1) allowed 2 R/ER on 7 hits in 5.0 IP. Jim Miller allowed 3 R/ER on 3 hits and a home run in 2.0 IP.

At the plate: Shortstop Robert Andino went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Third baseman Josh Bell went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Pawtucket in the first game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves RHP Ryne Reynoso (0-3, 5.03 ERA) is scheduled to face LHP Kris Johnson (1-1, 6.39 ERA) of the Red Sox.
