Rochester Red Wings News Release

Jed Lowrie hit a pair of home runs, powering the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 6-4 win over the Red Wings Sunday afternoon. Glenn Williams and Gil Velazquez each had two hits for Rochester, who lost starting pitcher Brian Bass to an injury in the fifth inning.

After two straight outstanding starts, Bass had a rough beginning to his start Sunday. A 34-pitch first inning ended with three Pawtucket runs on the board, including a two-run homer from Lowrie after a lead-off hit from Jacoby Ellsbury. Bass struck out the next two hitters, but then hit a batter followed by a steal and an RBI double from Bobby Scales.

The Wings got a run back in the fourth off knuckleballer Charlie Zink, with Garrett Jones scoring when Tommy Watkins reached on an error. Pawtucket got the run back in their half of the fourth, when Kevin Cash launched a two-out solo home run.

After a pickoff attempt to first in the fifth, Bass had to come out of the game with a right shoulder strain and was replaced by Brad Baker. Lowrie homered on the first pitch he saw from Baker, resulting in a 6-1 lead. Baker then struck out the next three batters to end the inning; he finished with five strikeouts and two hits allowed in two innings.

Williams smashed his eighth home run of the season off Zink in the top of the sixth, to make it 6-2 Paw Sox. Matt Tolbert's RBI double off Zink in the seventh brought home another Rochester run, and the Wings scored their final in the ninth. Watkins hit his 22nd double of the season, moved to third on a ground out and came home on a sacrifice fly from Velazquez.

Jay Sawatski finished up with two shutout innings after Baker, allowing one hit and striking out one.
