NORFOLK, Va. -- Indianapolis and Norfolk played to a rain-shortened, 2-2 tie Sunday evening in front of 5,209 at Harbor Park. The game was called in the middle of the eighth due to heavy precipitation on the East Coast.
The tilt will not be finished as Sunday was the final regular-season meeting between the two clubs. All statistics will count towards 2007 totals, but the result will not count in the International League standings.
The Indians are still 58-56 on the season and 26-31 on the road, while the Tides hold steady at 55-59 overall and 29-38 at home. Monday will be the Tribe's 259th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Indianapolis cracked the scoreboard in the opening frame when 2B Brian Bixler (1-for-3, 1 R) walked, stole his 26th base of the campaign and scored on LF Yurendell de Caster's (1-for-4, 1 RBI) base knock to right.
The Indians added another run in the fifth. SS Luis Ordaz (1-for-3, 1 R) tagged his 20th double to left, moved 90 feet closer on a passed ball and raced home on C David Parrish's (1-for-3, 1 RBI) single to left.
Norfolk evened the affair in the seventh when C Alberto Castillo (1-for-2, 1 R) singled to left before 2B Bo Hart (2-for-2, 1 R, 1 RBI) hammered a triple to center. CF Tike Redman (1-for-3, 1 RBI) then scored Hart on a base knock to center.
Tribe RHP Bryan Bullington (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 SO) was in line for the victory until Norfolk rallied in the seventh. LHP Garrett Olson (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) started for the Tides, but did not return after the first rain delay.
The game was halted for 51 minutes in the first inning. The rain returned in the eighth and everyone sat around for another 26 minutes before Norfolk officials decided to end the affair in a tie.
Indianapolis will enjoy its final open date of 2007 on Monday before opening a four-game series at Louisville on Tuesday. Indians RHP John Van Benschoten and Bats RHP Johnny Cueto are expected to square off in the series opener at 7:05 p.m.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
