Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.- Right-hander Scott Patterson will get a championship ring in 2010.
His Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle) team won the championship of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League Friday night, taking the title series in a three-game sweep of the Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis). All three games of the series were played in Memphis, the result of renovations that have begun at the Rainiers home, Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Washington.
Patterson returned to Lancaster to open the 2010 season, his first time with the Barnstormers after signing with the New York Yankees organization in June, 2006 and eventually reaching the Major Leagues with the Yankees and San Diego. With the Barnstormers this season, he had posted a 1-1 record with eight saves and a 2.81 ERA in 17 appearances before being signed by the Mariners on June 7. The Pittsburgh area native appeared 29 times for Tacoma, going 2-1 with six saves and a 2.67 ERA. He fanned 36 batters and walked only nine in 33.2 innings of work.
During the playoffs, he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings over four appearances, yielding two hits and a walk while fanning six. He picked up the win in the opener of the semifinal series with two perfect innings against his former Lancaster teammate, Matt Watson, and the Sacramento River Cats (Oakland).
The "Birdman", as Patterson was dubbed by ex-Lancaster pitching coach Rick Wise also pitched 1 2/3 innings in the title-clincher on Friday, a game eventually won, 10-6, in 11 innings by the Rainiers.
Next up for Patterson and the Tacoma ballclub is the Class AAA Championship Game, which will be played at Oklahoma City on Tuesday night. The Rainiers' opponent will be the International League champion Columbus Clippers (Cleveland), managed by Lancaster County native Mike Sarbaugh.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are in their sixth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
