Last Night's Suspended Game Goes Into Extras

Camden Riversharks News Release


CAMDEN, NJ - The Camden Riversharks were defeated by the Newark Bears after the two teams resumed their Thursday evening suspended game. Armando Benitez earned the victory for Newark (2-1). Kelvin Villa came in at the bottom of the twelfth to record his first save of the season. Riversharks, Tim Bittner, was charged with the loss (1-3).

It was a back and forth game for the entire twelve innings.

Both teams scored in the first frame. Tim Raines Jr. led off with a single for Newark, stole second and was driven in for the score by a base hit by Carl Everett. Chris Walker led off the Riversharks frame blasting a solo home run over the right field wall to tie the game 1-1.

Next inning the Riversharks tacked on another with a Sean Smith double. Smith moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home plate after Josh Horn was put out at first.

Brian Barton answered back quickly with his home run to even the score at two runs a piece.

More runs were traded in the following innings. The Sharks would score another two runs in the fourth and sixth frame, and the Bears would also add one run making it a 4-3 game.

It was not until the top of the eighth Newark took the lead with two runs added. Eric Munson singled. Manny Mejia hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Munson. Pitcher William Vaughan threw the ball away at second base. Issiah Kaaihue hit another sacrifice bunt and advanced to first with the Chris Malec overthrown ball to first. Munson scored on the Malec error to tie the game at four. James Cooper then grounded into a fielder's choice where Kaaihue was put out at second and Mejia scored the go ahead run, 5-4.

The two teams picked up the next day with one out in the top of the eighth on Friday evening. The Riversharks ended the top of the frame with a one run deficit, but would tie the game (5-5) with a Josh Horn double to center to score Teuris Olivares.

No runs were scored in the ninth, so the teams went into extra innings.

After Newark took the 6-5 lead in the top of the eleventh, Camden tied it at 6 at the bottom of the inning on a throwing error on by the catcher, Kaaihue, trying to stop Juan Francia stealing third.

Newark took the 7-6 victory in the top of the twelfth on league's leading hitter, Brian Barton's double to center to drive in Paddy Matera.
