Lancaster Stormers News Release
Prior to this week, the Lancaster Barnstormers had gone 20-6 with Josh Hall on the mound. Not even that magic has been able to hold in this final week.
Long Island put three unearned runs on the board in the fourth then reached Hall for three more in the seventh as the Ducks won their second straight at Clipper Magazine Stadium, 9-1, in front of 7,798 on Saturday evening.
Lancaster had a positive start to the night, taking a 1-0 lead in the second. With one out, Ducks spot starter Ivan Maldonado hit Ryan Mulhern in the side with a pitch. Joe Gaetti drew a two-out walk, and Josh Johnson produced a run with a solid single to left. Other runners moved to second and third as Matt Esquivel's throw skipped past catcher Brendan Monaghan. Maldonado was able to retire Vic Gutierrez on a deep fly to right, and the Barnstormers control of the game was soon to end.
Hall (13-7) mastered the Ducks for 3 1/3 innings, but his grip on the lead started to slip when Esquivel's grounder went through Aaron Herr's legs at third for a one-out error. Matt Padgett grounded a single through the wide hole on the right side to add a second runner. Hall got Javier Colina on a foul pop up, but Monaghan took a 2-2 pitch to the warning track in left for a ground rule double to tie the game. Bridger Hunt lined a two-run double to the alley in right center to grab the lead before Hall retired Joey Gathright on a liner to right to escape further harm.
Hall kept the Ducks in check over the next two innings, but Gathright drove a triple over Gaetti's head in center to start the seventh. Matt Cavagnaro singled him home with a grounder through the left side for a 4-1 lead. Willis Otanez scalded a single to left, and Esquivel produced another tally when his pop fly to shallow center fell in. Padgett chased Hall with a long ground rule double to left center and a 6-1 lead.
Long Island was able to strike for three more against Pat Overholt in the eighth on five more hits. Billy Kovatch doubled home the first with a liner to right center. Otanez made it 8-1 with a base hits to center, and Padgett brought the final across with another that fell in short center. Otherwise, Overholt struck out the side.
Maldonado (4-4) scattered five singles over five innings before giving way to Chris McCoy. McCoy allowed only one base hit as did Ricardo Gomez, who threw the ninth.
The 2010 Barnstormers season wraps up on Sunday afternoon as Rick Bauer (0-4, 3-13) will take the hill against the team with which he started the season. Kyle Jackson (2-3, 4-10) will work for Long Island. Game time is 1:30.
