Pats Take on 2-0 Red Deer Rebels, Saturday

Red Deer, Alta. - The Regina Pats continue their Alberta road trip Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against the Red Deer Rebels at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

MATCHUP

The Pats have won back-to-back games, with wins over Moose Jaw (6-3) and Edmonton (OT, 4-3), as Regina sits with a 2-1 record through three games. The Pats are coming off a 4-3 overtime win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Thursday where Connor Bedard (2G-1A), Tanner Howe (2G-2A) and Borya Valis (2A) provided all the offence, with Bedard scoring his fifth overtime goal of his young career. Howe's four points (2G-2A) is a new career high.

The final shots were 37-25 for Regina on Thursday, with the Pats going 1-4 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

On the other side, the Rebels are 2-0 on the season following back-to-back wins over Edmonton to open the season, as they won 5-2 at Rogers Place and 5-3 at home. Kai Uchacz (1G-1A), Jhett Larson (1G-1A) and Jace Isley (2A) had multi-point games in their 5-3 win. Defenceman Hunter Mayo also scored for the Rebels, giving him three goals in two games. Larson leads the team with three goals and two assists for five points in two contests.

The final shots in the Rebels last win were 38-25, while going 1-3 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill, as they won their home opener over Edmonton for a second straight season.

Last season, the Red Deer Rebels bounced back from a five win 2020-21 season with a 45-19-2-2 record, good for 94 points, as they finished third in the Eastern Conference, winning round one over Brandon in six games before being swept by Winnipeg in round two. The Rebels are still without Ben King who scored 52 goals last year for the beginning of the season, but have received several other key players from NHL camps.

The Pats are 63-47-4-6-5 vs. the Rebels, all-time, going 29-27-2-2-3 on the road and 34-20-2-4-2 at home.

It's the first of four meetings this season between these two clubs. The Pats went 0-4 against Red Deer last year (out scored 16-to-10), but all four contests were decided by two goals or less. In fact, since the 2019-20 season, their last eight meetings have been decided by two goals or less with the Pats going 3-4-1 during that time. The Pats are 7-6-3 against the Rebels since the 2017-18 season.

HEADLINES

Stanislav Svozil will make his Pats season debut tonight in Red Deer, as he was reassigned by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday after playing in pre-season games with the club. Last season, the Prerov, CZE product scored 41 points (10G-31A) in 59 games with Regina.

Alexander Suzdalev made his regular-season debut for the Pats on Thursday, making him the 1,410th player in Pats' franchise history. He also picked up his first career point on the overtime winner.

Cole Dubinsky is two points away from 100 and 5 games away from 200.

Tanner Howe is 3 assists away from 50.

Luke Bateman played in his 150th career game on Thursday at EDM.

BY THE NUMBERS

2-0: Road record for the Pats to start the season...last year, the Pats went 3-6-2-1 on the road against Alberta opponents and 10-12-3-2 overall against those Alberta clubs...their last Alberta road trip was a three-in-three weekend, where the Pats dropped all three contests, losing to Edmonton (6-3), Red Deer (6-4) and Calgary (OTL, 4-3) in late February...overall, the Pats went 9-22-2-1 on the road last season.

2: Tanner Howe (2G-4A) and Borya Valis (2G-3A) are the only players on the Pats roster to have recorded at least a point in all three games this season...Howe is currently tied for first in the WHL in assists with four while Valis five points is tied for fourth in the league.

7: Number of points (5G-2A) in three games for Pats captain Connor Bedard leads the WHL, while his five goals are second...last season, he produced 100 points (51G-49A) in 62 games, finishing fourth in points and second in goals behind Ben King who scored 52.

31: More games remain before the Christmas break, with 18 of them on the road and 13 at home.

51: Goals last season foor Connor Bedard made him the youngest player in WHL history to reach 50+ goals...Dan Lucas (57G, 1974-75) and Glen Goodell (63G, 1986-87) reached the mark in their 16-year-old season, but had already turned 17 by the time they captured the feat.

69: Points (27G-42A) for Tanner Howe last year was tied for third amongst all rookies, while his 42 assists were tied for third...he finished one point away from tying Jordan Weal for the fourth most points (70) by a 16-year-old in a single season in franchise history.

240: Goals for last season ranked 10th in the WHL and fourth in the Eastern Conference, averaging 3.52 goals per game...the Pats were the only team in the WHL last year that has scored 200+ goals and did not make the playoffs...their 277 goals against was fourth highest in the league.
