Game Story

A physical opening to the game saw the Pats look to set the tone in a key divisional matchup. Taz Burman made the first big stop in the Swift Current net when he turned away Cole Sanford in tight. Pats netminder Tyler Brown was forced to turn away a quick chance from Bronco Jamal Watson in the slot. It all added up to a scoreless first frame with Brown making 12 stops and Burman turning away 10 chances.

The Broncos got on the board quickly with the teams back on the ice for the second. Tyler Steenbergen lifted a powerplay goal into the net just 54 seconds in to break the ice. The hosts added to their lead when a point shot was stopped by skates to the side of the net and Glenn Gawdin was able jam the puck into the goal just past the nine minute mark. The Pats broke onto the scoreboard with seven minutes remaining in the period when Cole Sanford spied Sergey Zborovskiy sneaking in from the point and the Russian defender went up top. Brown came up large for the Pats following the goal robbing Gawdin on a two-on-one, then stopping Jamal Watson on a penalty shot to keep the score at 2-1 Broncos through forty.

The Pats opened the third with a great opportunity to tie the contest with a 5-on-3 powerplay, but when they couldn't capitalize, Watson got away out of the box and buried a shorthanded goal. The Blue and White came right back and got within one when Sean Richards did well to take a cross-ice feed from Cole Sanford and slide it to the back of the net. Midway through the period, the Pats went to the powerplay and, this time, cashed in. Adam Brooks set up Connor Hobbs for a heavy one-timer and a 3-3 tie. Regulation solved nothing with the teams heading to overtime. The Broncos enjoyed a powerplay in the extra frame, but the Regina penalty kill came up with a big stop. Into the shootout, Cole Sanford and Adam Brooks both scored and Tyler Brown turned away two Swift Current shooters for the 4-3 win.
