Patriots Win Pitchers' Duel 3-1

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 3-1 in front of 6,333 fans at Citibank Park on Wednesday evening.

Somerset struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Catcher Jason Belcher led off by reaching first on a Ducks' fielding error on a ground ball to first and came home on a one out RBI double to left center by first baseman Joe Burke. Rightfielder Mike Rodriguez then ripped a two out RBI double off the right field wall to plate Burke.

Long Island got a run back in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Patriots' lead to 2-1 when rightfielder Johnny Hernandez drew a lead off walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a one out RBI single to left by catcher John Pachot.

The Patriots added a run in the top of the third inning to make it 3-1 when second baseman Teuris Olivares led off with a single to left, advanced to second on a walk by Burke and scored on a one out RBI single to center by Rodriguez.

Patriots' starter Kip Bouknight (5-8) picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four and walking three in five innings of work. Ducks' starter Julio Manon (7-5) suffered the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out five in six innings pitched. Patriots' closer Bret Prinz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 18th save of the season.

With the win the Patriots improved to 31-20 in the second half and 74-47 overall while the Ducks dropped to 25-27 and 62-60 overall.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, September 7th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for 6:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes a Post-Game Fireworks show presented by Cablevision Advertising Sales.
