Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., September 3, 2009)- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-1 on Thursday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,301 at Citibank Park.
Back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first inning gave Long Island a quick 2-0 lead. Freddie Thon's first homer as a Duck, followed by George Lombard's deep blast to right field highlighted the frame.
Somerset got one run right back in the top of the second with Elliot Alyala's two-out RBI double off Ducks' starter Troy Cate.
Long Island plated two more runs in the last of the third as Ray Navarrete crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Ducks a 4-1 advantage. In the fifth, Navarrete would strike again with his second two-run dinger of the contest off Pat's starter Chris Buglovsky.
Two insurance runs in the home half of the eighth pushed the Ducks' lead to 8-1. Matt Cavagnaro's RBI groundout and Rob Sandora's RBI single did the damage.
Cate (10-5) earned the win, tossing five innings, yielding five hits and one run, with two punch-outs. Buglovsky (5-2) was hit with the loss as he surrendered eight hits and six runs in six innings of work. Drew Shetrone, Ron Flores, Rob Paulk and Jason Norderum each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to preserve the victory.
