CENTRAL ISLIP , NY- The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-1 in front of 6,301 fans at Citibank Park on Thursday evening.
Long Island struck first with a pair of runs on back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. First baseman Freddie Thon hit a two out solo home run (1) to right and then leftfielder George Lombard followed with another solo home run (10) to right.
Somerset got a run back in the top of the second inning to make it 2-1 when catcher Travis Anderson lined a one out single to right, moved to third on a two out single up the middle by first baseman Joe Burke and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by leftfielder Elliott Ayala.
The Ducks scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-1 when shortstop Dennis Donovan hit a lead off single to right and came around to score on a one out two run home run to left by designated hitter Ray Navarrete (21).
Long Island plated another two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 6-1 when second baseman Juan Francia hit a lead off single to right and scored on two run home run to left center by Navarrete (22), his second of the game.
The Ducks added their final two runs in the bottom of the eight inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Lombard led off with a single to left, moved to second on a single to center by centerfielder Estee Harris and scored on a one out RBI ground out to short by third baseman Matt Cavagnaro. Catcher Rob Sandora then drove in Harris with a two out RBI single to center.
Ducks' starter Troy Cate (10-5) picked up the win, allowing one run on six hits while striking out two and walking none in five innings of work. Patriots' starter Chris Buglovsky (5-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out no in six innings pitched.
With the loss the Patriots dropped to 31-21 in the second half and 74-48 overall while the Ducks improved to 26-27 and 63-60 overall.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, September 7th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for 6:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes a Post-Game Fireworks show presented by Cablevision Advertising Sales.
