Patriots shut out Road Warriors, 7-0

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots shut out the Road Warriors 7-0 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. First baseman Jim Burt doubled and scored on an RBI double by center fielder Patrick Boran.

Somerset broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase the lead to 4-0. Left fielder Henri Stanley drew a walk and crossed the plate on an RBI double by shortstop Kevin Nicholson. Third baseman Jeff Nettles followed with a two-run home run to left field for his league leading 11th long ball of the season.

The Patriots added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Stanley singled and Nicholson drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Nettles drove home Stanley with an RBI double and right fielder Larry Barnes then plated Nicholson with an RBI single to give Somerset a 6-0 lead.

Burt gave Somerset another run on a solo home run (2) to left field that made the score 7-0 Patriots after eight innings.

Patriots starter Billy Sylvester (3-0) picked up the win, allowing five hits and striking out eight in eight scoreless innings pitched. Road Warriors starter Chris Steinborn (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run on three hits in five innings pitched.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday with a 7:05 pm game against the Road Warriors. Thursday's game includes a chance for fans to win $10,000 at the ballpark courtesy of Rolling Rock and Car Show Night.
