Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - July 5, 2006 - "If I weren't an NBA player I would be third base coach for the Newark Bears. I would wave everybody, no matter what. It's fun eating sunflower seeds, wearing the uniform and doing the signs." That was the quote from Golden State Warriors Power Forward Troy Murphy in the Sports Illustrated SI Players Questions section of the February 13 issue. The Morristown, New Jersey native will see his dream come true on Friday, July 21, as he joins Bears manager Chris Jones, pitching coach Pete Filson, and hitting coach Victor Torres on the bench for the game against the Long Island Ducks beginning at 7:05 pm.
Fans dressed in NBA apparel will receive FREE admission at the box office. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a limited edition Troy Murphy figurine featuring Murphy wearing a Bears red alternate jersey with his basketball number one, home white baseball pants, and basketball sneakers. The Murphy figurine is holding a basketball in his left hand, and a baseball bat in his right hand.
"We are very excited to welcome Golden State Forward Troy Murphy to Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium as a coach for the Newark Bears in the game against the Long Island Ducks on July, 21," said Bears General Manager John Brandt. "It is a great opportunity for our fans to meet a local star from Notre Dame and the NBA."
In addition to witnessing Troy Murphy's first game as a professional baseball coach, all fans will be treated to a pre-game autograph session with Murphy and a post-game fireworks spectacular, on Saint Barnabas Medical Center/Newark Beth Israel Medical Center Children's Hospital of New Jersey Night/Clara Maass Night.
