Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - July 5, 2006 - The Newark Bears were defeated by the Long Island Ducks 9-2 Wednesday evening at Citibank Park.

The Ducks jumped out to an early 5-0 in the bottom of the first inning, led by designated hitter Bucky Jacobsen's three-run home run, his 11th of the season. Jacobsen finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. His four RBI now give him 42 this season, one more than Bears outfielder Will Pennyfeather for the Atlantic League lead.

The Bears cut the Ducks lead to 5-2 in the top of the third inning when shortstop Donaldo Mendez hit an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to six games, and after his 17th stolen base of the season, left-fielder Jose Herrera ripped an RBI single, scoring Mendez. Mendez finished the game 1-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Herrera ended the day 1-for-4 with one RBI.

Enemencio Pacheco (1-2) took the loss for the Bears after allowing five runs in 1/3 of an inning on three hits, while Pat Mahomes (7-4) earned the victory after tossing a complete game giving up two runs on five hits. Bears reliever Fernando Rijo threw two scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out four, in his first appearance since coming off the disabled list.

Ducks right-fielder Juan Gonzalez had a hard time figuring out the Bears pitching. After an RBI double in the first inning, Gonzalez struck out with the bases loaded, popped out with the bases loaded, and grounded into a double-play with runners on first and third and one out. He would finish the game 1-for-5 with one run scored and an RBI.

The Bears and Ducks will play the rubber match of the three-game series Thursday evening at Citibank Park. Joe Gannon (4-2) is scheduled to make the start for the Bears, while Greg Modica (4-3) will make the start for the Ducks.
