Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 5, 2006) - Heading into Wednesday's game against Newark, Long Island needed a win. Manager Don McCormack turned to Pat Mahomes to give his club the victory. The former Met went the distance and the Ducks bats came alive for a 9-2 triumph over the Bears. The win, coupled with an earlier Bridgeport loss, moves Long Island into a first place tie with the Bluefish in the Atlantic League North Division standings. The Flock has five games remaining in the season's first half, while the âFish have just three.
Bucky Jacobsen started the Ducks scoring with a three-run home run in the opening frame's fourth at-bat. Juan Gonzalez and Kevin Haverbusch drove in a run apiece to chase Newark starter Enny Pacheco after facing just seven batters. After the Bears put up two runs in the third, the Flock rebounded with a pair of runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings to conclude the game's scoring.
Mahomes (7-4) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in his second complete game of the season. Pacheco (1-2) absorbed the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits in a third of an inning outing.
Offensively, the Ducks were led by Jacobsen who finished the night 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs and four RBI. Henry Rodriguez and Haverbusch each added a pair of hits on the evening. Rodriguez scored twice while Haverbusch drove in three.
Mel Stocker finished the evening without a hit, but made the game's most spectacular catch in the fifth when he dove to catch a ball in deep right field that Juan Gonzalez lost to rob Jack Santora of an extra-base hit.
The Ducks and Bears will play the rubber-match on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Greg Modica (4-3) will take the hill against Newark's knuckleballer Joe Gannon (4-2). The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive water bottles courtesy of PC Richard & Son.
