Patriots Pound Bears 16-3

NEWARK, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 16-3 in front of 4,077 fans at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Friday evening.

Somerset broke a 2-2 tie by sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring ten runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 12-2 lead. First baseman Mike Kinkade was hit by a pitch to lead off and came around to score on a RBI double to left center by third baseman Jose Morban. Catcher Travis Anderson then hit a one out RBI single to center that scored Morban and rightfielder Bryan Goelz followed with a single to right, putting men on first and third. Shortstop Patrick Boran then laid down a RBI bunt single up the first base line that drove in Anderson and second baseman Teuris Olivares lined a RBI single to center that plated Goelz. Rightfielder Jason Romano followed with a RBI single to left that scored Boran. After a walk by centerfielder Mike Lockwood loaded the bases, Kinkade lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right to plate Olivares and Morban ripped a RBI double to left center to drive in Romano. Lockwood then scampered home on a wild pitch and then designated hitter Brandan Larson drew a walk. Anderson finished the scoring with a two run double to left center that scored both Morban and Larson.

The Patriots struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Boran got the scoring started when he lead off the game with a solo home run to left, his 2nd of the 2007 season. Olivares then doubled down the third base line and came around to score when Romano followed with a RBI double into the left field corner.

The Bears tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Ramon Castro drew a one out walk and moved into scoring position on a single to right center by centerfielder Keith Reed. Second baseman Javier Colina followed with a RBI double to left center that scored Castro and first baseman Victor Rodriguez plated Reed with a sacrifice fly to left.

Somerset added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 15-3. Kinkade led off by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second when Morban reached on a Bears fielding error on a groundball to second. Pinch hitter Alan Zinter then cleared the bases with a three run home run to right, his 11th of the year.

Newark got a run back in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 15-3 when Colina led off with a solo home run to left, his 20th of the year.

The Patriots scored their final run in the top of the ninth inning to make it 16-3 when Kinkade reached on a fielders choice to third, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single to left center by Morban.

Patriots starter Sam Marsonek (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out none and walking three in six innings of work. Bears starter Carlos Mirabal (8-6) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on twelve hits while walking one and striking out two in 5.1 innings pitched.

With the win the Patriots improved to 14-8 in the second half and 49-36 on the 2007 season while the Bears dropped to 10-10 and 46-37 overall.

The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Tuesday, August 7th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears.
