Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers played one of their best games of the 2007 season as the club ended a three-game losing streak with an 11-2 victory over the Camden Riversharks in front of 5,614 Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was a night where everything worked. Each member of the starting lineup contributed at least one hit to a 15-hit attack. Gustavo Martinez turned in a quality start, holding the Riversharks to two runs in a seven-inning stint. The defense was flawless, turning four double plays to aid Martinez' escape from some tricky innings. It was indeed a stellar all-around performance.
Danny Gonzalez and Dominick Ambrosini, the two hottest hitters on the club, continued their sprees with three hits each. Mike Woods doubled twice, and Jeremy Todd lofted his 17th home run of the season in the onslaught.
Woods doubled down the left field line off Ryan Costello (6-8) to start the night. He had to wait at second base through two outs but finally caught a ride home when Ambrosini lined a single into right.
Gonzalez and Jutt Hileman each doubled to produce a second run in the third, but it was what the teams made of their bases loaded chances in the fourth that turned the game into a rout.
Martinez, who had coasted through the first three innings, facing only nine batters found quick trouble in the fourth. Dennis Abreu and Matt Demarco opened the inning with singles and advanced on a double steal as Randy McGarvey struck out. Dwight Maness walked to load the bases, bringing L.J. Biernbaum to the plate.
The lefty slugger, in a 3-for-34 slump prior to the game, ripped a liner headed toward right center. Second baseman Travis Hake tipped it with his glove, knocked it up in the air and caught it again before it reached the ground. Demarco was caught off second, and Martinez was out of the jam.
The Barnstormers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning. It all started when Todd was clipped by a Costello fastball. Russ Cleveland and Steve Van Note delivered singles to left. Lancaster pushed its lead to 3-0 on a walk to Travis Hake. Woods followed with a three-run double over Abreu in left but was out trying to take third. Gonzalez then slammed his 15th homer of the year to right center for a 7-0 advantage.
Camden finally cracked Martinez (6-7) in the sixth when McGarvey and Biernbaum belted solo homers.
